West Kootenay Rabbit Hunting (Where to go)

    Hey all,

I'm out in the west kootenays (trail area) and was wondering if anyone knows any good spots for rabbits, as the season opens in a week. I have seen some randomly on back roads and logging roads, but it was just by luck I would assume.

Is there possibly a more precise way (or place) to find them? I know there likely won't be some magical meadow with 100 of them, but some kind of direction and strategy suggestion would be great.

    Thanks,

    Dave

Hi Dave, drive up a few logging roads that climb into the hills from the valley...if you know of some that have deciduous bushes on or near the edge of the road that's a bonus. Start climbing up into the hills about an hour before dusk, driving slowly and quietly...you'll soon find a road or two in the area with snowshoe warrens. If you see and shoot one, creep along because there will usually be more in that stretch of a few kilometers. Logically, start with the roads you spotted rabbits on already, if you get to where you saw them shortly before dusk, when they come out to eat, you'll most likely see more of them than just the one...good chance you'll shoot a few. You can maximize your take by using head shots with a rimfire rifle if you're a good shot, or if you're using a shotgun then use a high brass heavy load of #6 shot with modified choke, in most cases. You can switch to full choke if they're skittish and all you get is really long shots. One last thing, Dave, is that they're not the brightest critters going, and I've worked the 3 or so kilometers of a road where they have their warrens, then turned around after another click of not seeing anything, and taken another one or two on my way back just before dark! If you want to clean them and skin them in the bush, you'll be doing it by the light of your headlights on your way home, so look for a decent sized stump near the road on your way up...they make perfect butcher's blocks! Keep your loaded 12 gauge(buck n slugs) nearby while you're dressing out your hares, I'm really happy I did one time a few years ago...

Hey that's another good way to go but I still like my "butcher block" stump, lol!
