Now then, get your weapons—your quiver and bow—and go out to the open country to hunt some wild game for me.

    Re: Prince George Elk

Thanks. Kids are napping so i got a sec to give the story.

My buddy spotted a few elk just before opener in an area that i had only heard the odd story of someone spotting an elk. I went out and put up my game cam just after opening day and captured four cow elk on the second night. I went out again with a buddy sunday morning at first light and we bumped a cow elk and a large bull that were laying in a cutblock. It never gave us a good enough chance get a count to make sure it was not a large 5 point. We tried calling it back out but no luck. The interesting thing about this sighting is that the elk were in the exact same spot my buddy had seen them before opener and the took off to the exact same chunk of timber. We hiked around a bit and came to the conclusion that bull had a few cows penned up in there and they only were venturing out at night to feed.

The wife and I went out Thursday night with the sole intent of walking into the timber patch, finding a decent trail where they were coming and going into the cutblock, and putting up the game cam to confirm they were still there (gaining info for a weekend hunt). I taught the wife how to use my hyper-lip single call on the drive out, and got her to sit overlooking where my buddy and I seen that bull previously. While I went crashing around the timber patch (extremely noisy walk) and found a good cam location I could hear the wife cow calling in the distance, with only a few flubs here and there but overall quite passable. I thought I could hear the odd stick break about 75yds or so ahead of me but light was starting to fade so i let a few mews and estrus calls followed by a real short bugle. No answer. Light was starting to fade so I walked back out to the wife. As soon as i reached her she said there was something crashing in the bush behind me as I walked out (too crunchy for me to hear anything as I walked out). Right when she said that she pointed over my shoulder and said there something right there. I turned around to see the same bull i had let walk away on Sunday trotting out from the timber and angling towards us. Right after I got it in the scope it stopped behind a bunch of brush, obscuring its antlers. Not again! Luckily it stepped out at about 200yds out and gave me a long broadside pose. "three up top, g3's, boom!" Second shot dropped it, one more shot after walking up to it to speed things along. Walking up to it i was reminded how big these things are up close. It was a nice 6X7 with a 1 1/2" sticker as a 7th point. A quick drive out to cell service to let the mother and law know we'd be late then back to the block to go to work. Luckily i had enough rope to just reach the elk and we zipped it out to the road, broke it down and took it home.

Not bad for an evening hunt! Left home at 6pm, shot an elk just before 7:30pm, home by 11:30pm.
