Another limit morning

Well no $100 reward band this week,but another 16 Mallard drakes for my partner and I.And I thought when I moved to thr Interior from Ladner that my duck hunting days were done!My area is so good for waterfowl I haven't had a chance to go pheasant hunting yet,and best of all I never heard another shot.

Ian and I went out this morning and what a difference a week makes! No fog, strong wind and lots of mallards. I shot terrible but Ian did great with his little 20ga. SxS and 7/8 oz loads. We limited out 16 mallards in less than 40 minutes!!! I don't think my dog was out of the water for more than 5 minutes total the whole time. I saw Dave's truck on the way home, hope he had a good shoot too.

where do you usually go for duck/geese hunt in Ladner,I am a newbie,would you pls tell me more about duck/geese hunt to sharpen my skill,thanks alot.

We had a great morning as well. The shifty weather made for lots of ducks moving around and the decoyed pretty well. When I did my part so did Diesel.

I did well on the South Island today too. Hunted in the evening. The birds are decoying well. Always lots of shots where I hunt. Windy here aswell.

Unbelieveable morning, outside of the wind early, great temps, perfect cloud cover and ducks that were totally suicidal!

You know it wasn't until I read this later, that I remembered we were done so quick I never even got to show you the 20 ga!

I think we saw a total of less then a dozen non-mallards the whole time out, and we saw tons of mallards!

Only damper on the day was seeing duck carcasses in the channel on the way out, breasts removed. Breaking the law? maybe, wasn't picking them up to see if there was wings attached, but I mean how hard would it have been to throw them out of sight in the grass?

Cleaned saturdays and sundays limits last night and had some duckpetizers before dinnner, mmmmmmm good!

The marsh isn't a place to walk around in, most of the sloughs and ponds are too deep to wade and the bottom has troughs dug out by beavers and muskrats causing sudden drops. To hunt the marsh properly, you need a dog, a boat, waders (preferably chest waders) and decoys. Without a dog or boat, you shouldn't hunt out there as you'll loose a lot of birds due to areas of thick cover.
If you search around, you can hunt large opener areas without a dog. Pick your shots over the water and use your boat to recover birds but that's a lot of work and you can miss a lot of flights while out picking up birds. It can work well if you are a decent shot and have good decoys (like Ian). There are dykes thoughout the marsh but any bordering a closed area on even one side are closed to shooting. We see guys all the time taking long shots from the dyke and they sail a bird and have no hope of recovering it (they have no dog and sometimes no waders). There is little likelyhood of dropping a bird on the dyke and all dykes have deep water on either side of them.
I've posted on the site where and how to hunt the marsh, too much to type out everytime someone asks (no offense to you personally). Search through the old posts and you should find info and scout around with a special area map and make sure your reference points are in the open areas. Then plan a trip if you think it's do-able.

P.S. Ian, I'll check out the 20 another time... and you are right about the carcasses left by the slob hunters. If cleaning birds in the outdoors is what you want to do, make sure you leave a wing on for ID and get off the beaten routes and be more discrete with the leftovers! We get canoers and bass fisherman out there and they don't need to see that mess!
