    Alberta Whitetails

This hunting season started out the same as every other season, more trips planned than money and holidays.

The one constant that never changed was Alberta Whitetail hunting.

I'm fortunate to have lots of cousins south of Edmonton and as November rolled around I had a hard time sleeping and found myself dreaming of big bodied whitetails.

My biggest worry about the trip was shooting a small deer, I wanted a deer that was typical of big bodied Alberta deer. My cousin managed to get together about a dozen people to push bush for me so we were able to cover some larger wood lots and lots of ground.

On the very first drive, I was sitting on point near an oil well, when at least 4-6 does and fawns burst from the trees and cut across the tall grass in front of me. I searched for the buck and found 2 smaller bucks had snuck out below the does.

Neither of these bucks would of lived another day in BC but I was holding out and this was my first day hunting. About 30 minutes later another group of does wandered out and I immediately looked down the hill to see a larger buck working his way along the tree line. He stopped and grunted looking for his ladies and I instinctively lined up and shot. He rocked hard on the first hit but didnt fall so another 180 grain, 325 lead pill was sent. This one finished the job, clipping the bottom of both lungs and breaking a rib on the far side.

What a rush, I had my first Alberta Whitetail. I hope you guys enjoy the pics and story.

This deer weighed in at 320 lbs, greatest inside spread 21" with 5" bases. After a few drinks we had the deer rough scored at 145.

He is now in the care of Ray Wiens as I decided that this deer was special to me in the fact I got to finally, after 12 years of planning, hunt with my cousins and that this is my first Albertan deer.
