Rabbit vs. Hare

Hello, I'm thinking of hunting some schedule C rabbits (eastern cottontail or european rabbit) and I looked them up and the snowshoe hare and they can all be brownish gray at least sometimes. Now I know the hare is larger and tends to have shorter ears, but is a there a general rule of thumb to tell them apart from afar, while out in the bush?

easy way to tell different between snowshoe hare and cottontail is snowshoe turn white in winter.snowshoe are just starting to turn brown up here still have some white on them.
