In the rivers, this early in the season overnight sets out perform day sets, but a couple summers ago in july and august they were pretty verocious even in the day time. Best bait has been salmon pieces or roe. I did catch a bunch on freezer burnt anchovy the other day. Biggest struggle is finding 'big' ones. Are there always big ones somewhere in a system, or do some places never grow big ones?
It's been a long while since I have gone after crayfish. Was thinking about those tasty critters the other day. We were eating some lobster and my wife says "I prefer crayfish". Hmm, I like the both but yeah... I think I prefer crayfish too. Tastes just as good if not better and more fun to eat.

Have you tried cheap hotdog wieners broken into have inch pieces? That's always been the most effective bait for me.

Well, even though I started this thread, I never made the time to pursue crayfish.

I’ll have to settle for going after their bigger cousins. The season opens July 1st down here. No traps allowed so I’ll have to take them with a spear gun.

Ya I used to do that with my kid, half inch pieces on a shoe string... let them grab ahold of it then slowly bring em up and into a container..

We had a great spot to fish them in the Okanagan... anyone know of any water body to find cray fish in the North Thompson area?

A buddy of mine has a cabin on Ruby Lk. on the Sunshine Coast. He uses a prawn trap baited with Cheddar Cheese Smokies to catch them.

I'd save the cheddar cheese smokies for myself

The crayfish seem happy with the cheap stuff. Like the little ones that say "may contain chicken and/or pork and or chicken / pork bi-products" ... I just break one of those up, put it in the bait trap, check the trap the next morning and usually have 2x the limit in one trap. With 3 or so traps down, I get to pick and choose larger size crayfish.

Man this thread is giving me the itch put some traps down. It's been several years.

Thanks guys for bringing this back! So good to see people interested in this overlooked / untapped tasty resource.
