Caping 101 ( how much cape to take )

Here is a good example of how much cape to bring to your taxidermist.
If possible do not split it up the back of the neck, just roll it forward as far as you can the cut the head off and take it in.

wild images has a good point ... IF ..... you can either freeze the cape and head, it's damn cold out already, or your getting it to the Taxidermist now. If you are in warm weather, delayed to get to the taxidermist, you must cape out the entire head to the gum line, split the lips and cross check them, turn the ears and salt the #$$%$*&I*&*^%$%^!!!! out of it.
Always skin to behind the front legs and down the front legs so the taxi man has lots to work with for a shoulder mount.

The y insition is made at the top but only long enough to get the skull out. The cape is then put back on the mannikin like a sock making for a cleaner looking mount and no sew line down the back to puff up over the years as the mount continues to dry.

best to ask your taxidermist, lots of taxi's prefer a tubed neck but there are some who also prefer it long cut. At least If you tube it he can always cut it if he prefers.

    Good pic/thread.

I screwed up on my BB cape because I didn't cut up from the belly to the back, like that. I ended up being a few inches short on the topside for a half body mount.

    Sucks to be me....

This would mean you would have to add the antlers/horns after the cape is mounted correct??? Wouldn't this turn into a lot more work than having the form prepared before mounting the cape. I.e. horns/antlers in place and properly aligned??? I'm only a hobby taxidermist and have only done a few mounts but it seems your method leaves less room for error.
