I’ve read comments like this before, and I’m just curious if anyone has actually had a CI that aged a double broomed thinhorn ram only based on visible annuli? We’ve had a few rams over the years that were double broomed as much as to the 3rd year annuli, and these rams were always aged including the missing annuli.
It may depend on the CI although one would think they have to follow the same criteria. There has been cases where they have been passed by the CI but then deemed illegal by the manager etc., and in some regions people take animals to certain CIs for some could be more forgiving. so did your rams still have 8 annuli and with the missing 3 they were called 11 or did they only show 6 and with the missing 3 made them 9. Maybe alaskas double broomed rule would work here
for thin horns. If an elk is shot in a 6 point area but the 5th tine is broke off right at the main beam so doesnt meet the tine requirement I dont think it would be passed as saying should of been there, same as broomed sheep dont think they
would say it would of been full curl if hadnt been broomed.
The Wild Sheep Society of BC is holding a Horn Aging seminar this weekend Saturday June 14 in Kamloops at the Coast Hotel starting at 2PM. It is preferred that you pre-register. Here is the link:
Interesting. When did he retire? I swore it was last year (or maybe the previous year) where I had heard this was the case.
I just heard from another ministry biologist, but it must have been recently because I talked to him not long after the sheep show on his office number.
