Not particularly, but they will do in a pinch.
It all depends on the price.

Dam good reel if you want Okd School heavy, clunky, but simple and hardly ever any issues.

The BONUS is, if you ever have Problems with your boat trailer Winch ....... one of these may get you out of a bind.

Guys keep them more for nostalgia or as display items these days. Iconic west coast fishing reels

They are called a knuckle buster for a reason. Beautiful for display but technology in drag systems has passed them by.

For what is on the market in comparison - not really.

Heavy. clunky, can't handle monofilament line without a considerable amount of backing to prevent the wooden reel from splitting. It's about the last reel I would choose for fishing.

Re: Peetz and re peetz reel?

My father's reel, about 50 yrs old. I would guess the line on it is 30lb Charterboat dating back to the early 80s. I think I'll clean it up, put on fresh line, and use it this year when springs open. It'll look pretty funny next to the other reels, but it's kind of cool to use something that old, clunky or not.

not a good reel for actual use. but they are an absolute Heritage piece of fishing nostalgia her on the west coast. great for display, anyone who fished here back in the day has used them, some with wire on them.
But if you are looking for a quality cheaper reel look at Shimano 200GT. They are the generation after Peetz. Want to spend more than that and own the generation after that? Islander M3....

Official Rules and Regulations - Tyee Club of British Columbia
pay attention to Section C Rule 3 Peetz fits, the rest dont.

this is why it kinda bugs me when people mention Tyee and being a "member" of the Tyee club. You catch a 30+ .... great fish but not Tyee Club material.
