    Re: Looking for live pigeons

I finally landed a steady stream of pigeons from a pigeon removal company. I already have four birds to pick up tomorrow morning. I’m very excited to go for a walk with my pup tomorrow and watch her chase a them.

because it’s her first time I was planning on just holding the pigeon for a few seconds to raise her excitement and just release and let her chase.

    any tips would be appreciated

You could also dizzy a couple of them, tuck their head under their wings and bury/hide them under a clump of grass and then go back and get your pup who doesn't know you've done that. Walk her, dragging a long lead behind her, in the direction to where the bird/s are hidden to see if she can locate them. Hopefully she'll instinctively go on point so you can flush the bird and then let her chase but if she busts in on her own that's okay, too. A few times of doing that with a short break in between each bird for her to think about what has just transpired and eventually (hopefully) she'll figure out on her own that she'll never be able to catch a bird in flight.

If she's a little slow on the uptake then what you can do once she's located the bird is half hitch the check cord around her belly to steady her up so she can't run after the bird. This is when it's often better to have another person working together with you so you can handle (control) the pup and the other person can hold the check cord. Fun times ahead!

Her first day with a few pigeons. She at least pointed at them then chased for a second then watched them fly off. Fun for both of us.

sorry the picture didn’t post. I’ll have to try later

I think they’re supposed to pause after the flush and watch for where they land after the shot, waitimg for a retrieval command. I didn’t realize it but my dog does it naturally.

She chased the first one for a couple seconds, the second one for a bound or two and the last two she just froze and watched them go

When using live birds, be aware that there is a plethora of laws around how you can legally use them. Know the laws before hand. It’s usually best to keep your training with live birds away from public view…

Have to echo the previous poster's comments. If you train on public land be very careful, especially with respect to animal cruelty laws in Canada.

Best bet is to find a hay farmer or two who will let you onto his land. I have a couple of spots. Won't let me hunt the property during the waterfowl season but have no qualms about letting me put launchers/pigeons onto his field and shooting them. The only time they might not want you on their fields is if it's getting close to cutting because they don't want you trampling the grass down. No one seems to cut during the exact same week so I find it rare not to have one of the fields at my disposal. We never use public land if we use loaded ammo. We have used starter pistols, though, and the pigeons just fly back home to the coop when released from the launchers.

Thanks everyone. My dad and a few family members have fields I can use. No pigeons are harmed either. They just fly off back to where they were captured
