    Looking for live pigeons

    Hello everyone

wondering if anyone in the fraser valley knows where a guy can get live pigeons? I can’t keep pigeons at my place so a coup is out of the question.

i have access to a farm up the street and I can trap pigeons there if someone has some ideas on how to do that.

my four month old bracco pup is pointing up crows and squirrels like crazy and I want to increase her drive some more.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated

On 70A Ave just off of 124th St. Looks like they already setup a bait station for you. Good luck man

Weekly Saturday agriculture auction in Abbotsford always has pigeons but they're getting pricey. I know people who buy them there, though. I think they go for $7-8 a bird, maybe more now. Wouldn't be so bad if after you bought them you could hang onto them and keep re-using them but in your case it's not an option. I was in the same boat as you, couldn't have a coop, so I trapped them regularly and just used them once. Unfortunately, I have to find another farm/location to trap them because between myself and the farmer shooting them with a pellet gun I cleaned them out,,,,probably trapped well over a 100 there the last few years. The farmer sealed off all the area in the building where they could get into nest so they no longer go there.

A good trap will pay for itself (about $140),,,,eventually.

Btw, what you see your dog doing when it locks up on squirrels, bunnies, and crows is not really a point. What your pup is doing is the start of a stalk. Most dogs, cats, coyotes, etc. will stop stalk-still when they see an animal that they might want to try and catch. The reason they stand still like they are pointing is they don't want the other animal to notice them. When they think they are going unnoticed they start creeping up on them. Dogs will even do it to each other just for fun. My dog does it on cats.

A true point is done solely by the sense of smell, NOT sight. A bird dog generally never sees what they are pointing at. They do it instinctively, just as soon they enter the scent zone but they do it only on certain types of birds,,,,game birds. They won't point hidden song birds, crows, seagulls, etc. because it's not the right "scent" for them. Btw, bird dogs won't or shouldn't point hidden dead game birds either. If they freeze up when they come onto a dead game bird, once again they are just locking up because they are not sure what they should do. What they should do is pick up the dead game bird and bring it back to you but that's all part of their training.

Pm me if you want more info on what type of pigeon trap to get.

Ask about the bird control at the airport(s). We used to get ours from there for a five bucks a dozen. They make good training birds for the dogs, if we hit them. Not always and so they became good food the hawks that hung around.

    Cheers

Here's a good example of what it looks like when a pointer/s are working a field and come in down wind of a bird entering the scent zone:

Mastercaster, your assessment of what constitutes a “point”is wrong.A young dog that demonstrates a lock up on seen or scented birds is considered a point.A well trained dog has to point scent or visual, controlling the impulse to bust in when a bird moves in front of him .

    Re: Looking for live pigeons

Thanks for the explanation Jagen. My dog is definitely stalking.

i talked to a pigeon removal company yesterday and they said they would try to help me out with five to ten birds a week. I’ll post back if it pans out. If I can get 10 birds a week I’ll have some to share. Cost of birds wasn’t mentioned so we will see.
