Wow thanks guys! Honestly didnt expect this many replies! A lot of stuff hear I hadn't even heard of before.

Perfect timing as I just got let go of my job (that I absolutely despised, in that certain area of the job anyways) yesterday. So one door shuts more open. The guiding to start I dont mind the grunt work and I understand starting at the bottom of the ladder in any field is pretty well a given. Thanks for everyones input and some more options to explore

35 years in environmental protection and as a forest tech with those three special letters after my name.

Here is a rule I learned....the more money you want to make, the less time in the field. If you are happy running around in the bush doing forestry/wildlife/fisheries work, then expect to live the life of living paycheck to paycheck with sh*tty hours, lots of time away from home and pretty strict rules about time off. I used to work in Rivers Inlet on a 21 and 7 shift and what sucked was that the day of travel out, (leaving at around 1300 and getting into Port Hardy around 1400 then the three hour drive to Courtenay) and reverse trip back in (arriving around 1200) was two of your 7 days off. Those other 5 days off went buy fast!! Bonus was there was no place to spend any $$$....

Guiding is great fun if you have the personality for it, the patience for it and again, no big paychecks in the end. And you miss out of your own opportunities. I really enjoyed it, but I was also getting paid my vacation from my regular job as well as a guide, so I was not there for the money.

A bio tech of fish tech will get you out in the field around critters and you don't have to take a bunch of schooling.

    Good luck

    Cheers

That is awesome you have a company that offers this service! I've only ever seen the odd posting from Alberta.
    Are you hiring?

Lots of those companies want you to pay out of pocket for training with no guarantee of a job, just that you’ll be “on the list” for work

My guys are all sub-contract, and when I pay $800 a day, I think they can pay for a few tickets

Be a roofer, always outside, up high and see lots of birds and odd raccoon
I like drinking beer and whiskey, shooting guns, jetboating, love a nice rack and a tight line, I am simply a sophisticated redneck...

I went to school for forestry in 2005, worked as a forest tech for many years, then ran a power saw in forestry operations for many years after that.

you can get a job as a forest tech with no schooling pretty easily. Lots of jobs want a RFT (registered forest technologist) title which takes school and some time to jump through hoops but it’s not required, I never bothered. Pay for an RFT is slightly better than an experienced technician with no schooling but lots of field experience, but not by a lot. If it’s a career you want to stick with, it’s probably worth going to school and getting as much certification as possible since that’s the way things are going in every industry.

as a green bush worker with no experience, your pay will be shit all and you will spend 9 months out of the year living in a motel, the other 3 months you will probably be collecting EI. As an experienced forest tech your pay will be slightly higher than shit all and you will still spend 9 months of the year living in a motel and the off season collecting EI.

Crap pay and conditions, but a very fun job. I saw alot of interesting areas, did a lot of fishing, quadding and exploring while working in the bush. Fun while I was young, but by the time I was in my mid 30’s I was pretty tired of being away from home and making shit all for money. Don’t know how old you are or where you’re at in life, but it might work for you and it might not. You’ll get more job offers and a few cents more a hour with no schooling and no experience the further away from civilization you go.

my take, stick with your trade and move somewhere you actually want to live, find a way to work somewhere with a flexible schedule or a bit more time off and enjoy the stability and pay you’ve worked to get.

I'm a water quality technologist by education...if you go into that field of expertise, it can offer jobs up in the bush when you work for a municipalities' water utility that has upland reservoir/water supplies - those jobs offer plenty of work up in the backcountry...but the course itself is a big commitment...but occasionally ppl will get those jobs without the education as well, so might be worth looking into...
