Angry Resolution to Raise the Age Requirement for Big Game Hunting Wildlife

Letter to Region 1 BCWF Reps

I am strongly opposed to the resolution to raise the age requirement for big game hunting wildlife.

    1) It shouldn’t matter what other Provinces do or do not do.

    2) The fact that our opportunities are shrinking shouldn’t justify forbidding a class of hunters from participating in elk and moose hunts based on age - next it could be 70 year olds can’t hunt big game either because we can’t carry a heavy load either! It is agist discrimination and not a fair justification at all.

    3) Just because many kids are not ready physically and mentally ready to hunt big game does not mean that those that are ready should be punished.

    4) Youth hunt require adults to be there anyway so the class of animal shouldn’t matter at all. I haven’t seen a deer in the Vancouver Island backcountry in years so I’d have to take my grandkids to other regions to hunt anyway so why not have the opportunity for moose and elk? Its crazy to think it is okay for a 10 year old to be able to hunt bear bunt not a moose or elk.

This whole resolution is just a way to appease sore losers in the LEH system. If you want to change something then change the LEH system or put forward resolutions to have the government add opportunity rather than play into their hands by screwing over one group of hunters over the others!

Frankly this resolution is BS and to reiterate I am STRONGLY opposed.

Thanks for being this up Bill.

I oppose this as well. Just goes to show you the mindset of the people willing to throw youth under the bus for their personal gains.

What is the age they are proposing?

I somehow missed this. I can’t believe it was even proposed.

agree 100 Hermit. This is a BS proposal.

It matters not what other provinces do or what age restrictions they apply. That is simply a lame justification, but not as lame as the next one.

"there are very few 10- and 11-year-old children that are physically and mentally ready to harvest most big game species"

How did they come to this conclusion??? What makes most 10 and 11 year olds "physically and mentally ready to harvest " a deer or bear but not an elk or moose.

It does not matter what the quarry is. The licensed hunter who is supervising the youth hunter provides the physical support, mentorship and guidance.

From the supporting brief, the real issue:

"It has been bought up several times at our Region 1 meetings that some families always seem to get LEH draws. Family units with multiple FWID numbers do have a huge advantage over families with only one member with a FWID number when it comes to drawing an LEH tag"

Another example of managing hunters, not wildlife.

Is there somewhere we can contact to oppose limitations on youth hunters?

There are always garbage proposals at BCWF. If your club is sending delegates be sure to have a conversation about the proposed resolutions.

Man, if I have to wait even longer to hunt with my kids now I’m going to be pretty pissed.

it is NOT the governments job to tell me when my child has the mental fortitude to harvest a bear.
Just because most of these pansy tree hugging fruits on the coast don’t have the mental fortitude to sustain themselves even as adults.

    guess I’ll put an edit.
this obviously isn’t directed at any HBC vancouverites but please remember you’re in the extreme minority in those cities.

Re: Resolution to Raise the Age Requirement for Big Game Hunting Wildlife

The problem is people try to cheat or abuse the system in bc by getting kids ,wives grandparents or anyone Thats passed the core and have gotten a hunter number to put in for LEH hunts so they have better odds of getting drawn even if those people dont even hunt .(all you need is a hunter number ). The other issue is a great many dishonest applicants seem to think that once someone in the family or group gets drawn then its a free for all for the group from people shooting on the kids tag or Dad doing the oh so popular but illegal "follow up shots and then pretending they are doing the right thing " I am always amazed at the excuses people use like " its okay cause its family or we have a gentleman's agreement , or it was a bad shot so im just making sure it doesnt suffer " ) . When people try to cheat the system or find an angle the system eventually catches up and puts in more rules and regulations. More rules will be coming down the pike in regards to this sort of thing .
