Re: Resolution to Raise the Age Requirement for Big Game Hunting Wildlife

What % of BC hunters are between the age of 10-11 ? I'd like to see the math on how it will improve LEH odds if you're not competing with this age bracket

    This ^^^

Since this is a province wide regulation, it will have to pass at the AGM.
It goes against the general trend of promoting hunting and ensuring the future of hunting.

There are always bad apples in the bin.

Re: Resolution to Raise the Age Requirement for Big Game Hunting Wildlife

Questions asked and answers from government's data people:

    1. How many different FWID holders applied for an LEH draw?

We received LEH applications from 77, 275 individuals for the fall 2024 LEH draw.

    2. I don’t know if your system can distinguish this, but what percentage of LEH applicants are “youth” i.e. Of the above number what % were under the age of 18?

There were 3, 961 applicants in the 2024 draw who were under 18 years of age at the time of the draw. Youth hunters represented approximately 5.1% of all applicants.

    3. What percentage of moose draw applicants are youth?

We received moose LEH applications from 68, 623 individuals, of which 3, 481 were under the age of 18 (5.1%).

    4. What percentage of shared hunt applicants never buy a hunting licence. Moose and Bison?

75.6% successful applicants for moose LEH followed through with the purchase of a licence. The table below shows the proportion of hunters who purchased a species licence after winning an LEH authorization:

Species % of LEH winners who bought a licence:
      Bison – 38%
      Elk – 71%
      Moose – 76%
      Sheep – 78%
      Mule Deer – 87%

    1. Anything else that might be pertinent to the discussion?

There does appear to be a small difference in the rates at which moose LEH winners purchase a licence, depending on whether they applied for a Shared hunt. Successful moose applicants in a Shared hunt purchased a licence at a rate of about 73%, while individual applicants purchased a licence 84% of the time. This effect was slightly exaggerated among youth applicants with only 64% of youth applicants purchasing a licence when they applied in a Shared hunt, versus 87% that applied individually. However, this same pattern also appears in hunts where applying as a group does not bring any benefit to the applicant (“Group” hunts instead of “Shared). For example, 78% of individual youth applicants purchased a mule deer or elk species licence after winning an LEH authorization, but licence purchase rates for youth dropped to just 57% after winning in a Group hunt application. So it appears that youth hunters are less likely to purchase a licence when they apply with other hunters. But this pattern is apparent even in hunts where applying with a group does not provide them (or their group members) any benefit in the draw.

People that are hunting their kids game are just criminals and should be treated as such.No to mention teaching bad behaviour to the kids.

Does anyone believe that if you had to purchase a tag for successful draws it would cut down on people just throwing in draw entries with no intension of hunting. There are always rumours of the tree hugging types purchasing limited entries just to save the animals. It could be attached to the cost of the draw but refunded if you were not successful. I understand it would be more paperwork but just a thought.

I was wondering the same thing.

Be nice if we could figure out how to put more moose or elk in the bush instead of devolving into a this spiralling mess of removing, segment by segment, ourselves from our heritage and nature.

The earlier a Kid is actively involved in Hunting the better and more likely he/she will continue hunting all his/her Life.

Reducing hunting opportunities for youngsters is BS. I am and have been a BC Guide-Outfitter for 47 years and wont support this BCWF nonsense resolution.

The other issue is a great many dishonest applicants seem to think that once someone in the family or group gets drawn then its a free for all for the group from people shooting on the kids tag or Dad doing the oh so popular but illegal "follow up shots and then pretending they are doing the right thing " I am always amazed at the excuses people use like " its okay cause its family or we have a gentleman's agreement , or it was a bad shot so im just making sure it doesnt suffer " ) . When people try to cheat the system or find an angle the system eventually catches up and puts in more rules and regulations. More rules will be coming down the pike in regards to this sort of thing .
So whats next. Prohibiting anybody residing in Abbotsforth to hunt north of Hope ?

    38% on Bison, brutal.
