After years of dreaming we finally pulled the trigger and booked a fly in hunt out of Dease Lake 6-26! We have most of our gear and systems planned and dialled in with the exception of the best way to store meat in thick grizz country for so long. We have 10 days of hunting and if you get lucky and shoot a moose in day 2 or 3 that is a TON of time for our local timber monsters to hone in on that scent and hit you with the old 5 claw discount. We're doing 1 flight in, 3 guys plus gear (damn near max out the weight capacity of 1200lbs) and 2 flights out. Hoping to haul 2 bulls out on the meat flight so we are trying to avoid calling in an early meat haul as we'll still need 2 planes out at the end of the 10 days.
- I've heard of guys sinking meat with water proof bags. Cost of waterproof bags for 2 bull moose brings the cost up thousands of dollars..
- The lake we're hunting has a small island around 150m from the shore at the closest point. Would this be a decent option? I'd imagine a determined bear will simply swim that distance no problem if it smells the goods
- Hang em high away from camp?
- Has anyone had success with an electric fence system? I have a back packing system for solos in grizz country for peace of mind at night and I'll tell you at 10K volts it packs a punch. Trust me lol
Last but not least is the question of has anyone ever had issues with spoilage from the potential of 8 days of storage as well as a full 24 hours travel back to southern B.C? Looking at historic weather you can still get some damn warm days late sept up north. We have always hunted close to home and never had these issues before. Thanks to anyone who can help.
I have used dry bags and sunk them in the lake in the past. Go to MEC or someplace similar and by the largest dry bags they have. Cost is minor compared to the cost of losing a moose quarter or two.
Sept 22 - Oct 2. Yeah we all have good packs. Going with the father in law though who’s etching into his 60s so I don’t imagine we’ll be hunting too far from the lake. We’ll see how they’re moving though.
Yeah dry bags seems to be the way to go.. Do you just sink them in the shallows and weigh them down with rocks?

No need for rocks when they have 100lb of meat in them. I usualy just do it in a spot were the roll top is out of the water.
Make sure meat is cold before you close the top.
Guessing probably not a lot for trees in that country? Could make a block & tackle/pulley system out of carabiners and rope/paracord. Clay Hayes' youtube channel gives a good demonstration, some other survival channels as well
