No idea what the purple thing is but the connector bottom left appears to be an RS-232 interface. Serial data connector widely used some time ago, still used for some industrial applications. One of my older notebook computers has an RS232 receptacle as well as a longer one with more pins.
Are there 2 different cords there?
One is a 12V charger of some kind.

I think you're right, cable salad. Definitely a standard 12VDC power plug, cigarette lighter & I can't think of any use in having that mated with an RS-232 interface. Looking a bit closer, partially hidden behind the RS-232 looks to be a low profile 2 pin C7 AC power plug. Purple thing looks like it might be a DIP switch device.
