Called in a couple with a grunt tube, last one was quite cool. Spotted a decent 4 point with a group of 8 does and fawns from about a km away. Wide open so ran at them trying to stay behind a couple small pines. Does saw me and spooked into the near by timber and buck followed. I got to 150 years of where they went in and started on my buck grunt, scraped a couple branches on a small pine and low and behold out comes the buck wanting to challenge me. The wind was coming toward me and I guess they didn't know exactly what I was. He stood there and I was able to drop him.
Other than that I called one in, in a thick pine block that had fresh rubs and stunk of rutting buck. I went in, found a trail and started to bang a set of antlers together, scraped some trees and antlers again. Sat silent for a minute, more antlers and I heard a crack, a couple seconds later a nice 3*4 came trotting in down the trail 20 yards away. He was quite surprised to see me pointing a .280 at him and didn't have time to turn before I let one fly
I never hunt deer without a grunt tube, never, both mule deer and Whitetail. I always have one within easy reach while still hunting. I have seen it work too often to not use one. One case in point years a go I had shown my hunting buddy my fairly new grunt tube that I had bought the year before and had used it and had mild success, (does and a yearling buck that had come back for a look after I had spooked them but they hadn't scented me) a few grunts on the grunt tube and they came back to see. My buddy say's oh ya, it's just another gimmick... long story short we were hunting this logged valley me on one side him on the other, he's walking up a skid road in the slash and the road Y's and he takes the upper trail, he's gone up that trail about 20-30 yards when he hears a grunt like I had shown him, he's thinking... that bugger is over here messing around with me when around a corner on the lower trail out walks a for point buck. The buck would be grunting as he walked 3-4 steps then stop and listen then grunt while walking again, he shot that buck so close it might have had GSR on it. When we met up again he asked... where can I buy one of those.
Ive called 5 mature mule bucks in, 3 to bow range when I hunted with a bow and 2 to less then 80 yds with a rifle. I was fortunate to meet Wayne Carlton who is an amazing caller and has his own product line of effective animal calls. During a break at a seminar he taught me about a new way to call he found effective and its been golden for me. Ive brought a 4 point in from a river bank that was 430 yds away to 50 yds of me and my hunting partner also brought a 4 point muley he could see leaving the area he was sitting in brought him back from almost 300 yds to right in front of him. Its a series of calls with the grunt tube that is done quick and you pump the bellows quickly in and out. Wayne doesnt know what it simulates but it sounds like several deer interacting. hard to describe it but its effective.
Hey thanks Tomahawk i started trying this between rattling sequences. I got the next 3 weeks off and will be goin back and forth from Blacktails to Mulies so we'll see what comes in.
Rattled in 2 blacktails before Nov 11th and Nov 15th same year, a book 4pnt (5 if you count the brows) and a small 2pnt.

I frickin love rattling, ever since those two blackies I rattled in in 2022 im hooked. I find it more exciting than calling in Elk. And it definitely works!
Gate that's a great idea. I cant promise it for this rut season as I've got a bull moose to turn into short ribs. burger, sausage, steaks and roasts and lings close Nov 15th and need to get some more tasty white meat. I'll need to get info on posting pics and video as I tried the other day to post a three generation family moose hunt but failed on the picture attachment and gave up till later when i have more time.
