I have an H&R 12 gauge single shot that's my go to birdgun when I'm not using the 22
What I like about it is it's light to carry, quick n easy to point, and it has an ejector for the shells, so it's quick to reload.
I just went down a rabbit hole on this too. I wanted a sxs for grouse, chukar and pheasant. What i found, if you are looking for a 12g sxs, there are a ton of used Beretta's out there at a great price. 20g, not so much. Ultimately, I found a CZ Bob White Gen1 in mint in 20g. I like the quality of the Gen1 vs Gen 2. I got it for $1050 to my door. First hunt is this Friday so I will give some feedback. If I like the sxs, then I am gonna drop a few bucks on a Rizzini. I personally like Italian shotguns. Don't get me started on my Benelli...love that gun. Good luck on your search.

One other tip would be to pattern your gun to see where it shoots, usually 16 yards ish shoot it at a spot on a large piece of cardboard to see where the pattern lands in relation to your aiming spot. It also will give you an idea about your choke to pattern size.
I got a good deal on a 20g synergy a couple years ago. What a sweet little gun. I recommend 20g unless you're really into sweet little light guns - then a 28g would be nice. If I was hunting upland as much as I would like - I would get a 28g. But, for all around utility you can't beat the 20 and you'll always find ammo. . Just my Dos Centavos.
I use a Baikal 22 WMR / .410 double barrel, works well for me. Son, who shoots more Grouse in a Season than I'll do in a decade uses a folding 17HMR of mine, he seems to have appropriated it. Son In Law, relatively new to hunting borrows my Remington .410 pump. Oh, and they all use my ammo, cheap buggers.
Do you guys have any suggestions on used double guns for chasing grouse? I’d like to pick up a few different style inexpensive used guns to see what suits me. I really have no idea what I’m looking for so anything I can read up about would be great. It looks like some cock when you close the action and some have one trigger and others have two. Or anything to stay away from. I’m looking for fit and features to see what works well for me and I know what to look for instead of just buying something expensive that I’d be wasting money on.
I was thinking sub $1000 or so. I’d like to stay with .410” or 28 gauge.
Greetings. I bought a Chiappa Double Badger in 22lr over a 20 gauge less than 2 years ago at Canadian Tire. It's a breakopen single shot but a lot of fun. It took me a little time to sight in the ghost ring sights but I can now split a playing card at 20 yards with it on a bench rest. I use it grouse hunting and keep it locked and folded up in my truck for "emergences" when scouting FSRs. On the odd occasion when I miss with the .22, the 20 Gauge fixes my mistake. I'd give it serious consideration and it's not a lot of $$.
Purchased this gun for grouse hunting and am a big fan: (Chiappa) "Double Badger Folding Shotgun/Rifle (Blued) 20GA-22LR/19"BBL"
Comes in around $750 all in. Quite impressed with the Italians. The 20 gauge rather than 410 is nice for availability of ammo. It's also quite beautiful, all my other firearms have synthetic stocks, I appreciate the wood.
The sight system is quite fragile, and it needs to be sighted out of the box. Great accuracy once it's tuned.
My wife has no interest in eating them any more, but when I did shoot the odd one it was with a donor Cooey 410 and before that a vintage Winchester Model 72 tube-magazine .22 my Grade 2 school teacher gave my wife when I introduced them. Made from 1938 to 1959, I have a hunch mine is a late 40s or early 1950s model, but with no serial number, who knows.
