Hmmm. I may have to adopt this practice, that's really smart. Also gives SAR a breadcrumb trail if a rescue were needed.

I know of a father and son a few years ago that jumped out of the truck near Red Lake to go after a deer. They got turned around and spent the night outdoors but were found on a logging road the next day. Back packs, warm clothes and gear left in the truck. It can happen pretty quickly. Go over a ridge and take the wrong way back and you are lost!

I do a lot of solo hiking around Kamloops in the fall and spring. I have a bag in my backpack with fat wood, lighters and paper. Flagging tape and a few granola bars. I figure I will make it a few days if something happens just by keeping a fire lit. I have flagging tape but more for marking a deer if I get one and need to make two trips.
I am 55 and in good health and can really cover some miles without any problem. Shed hunting I can do 6-7 km in a day so a younger guy could do way more I would think. It's amazing how quickly you can put distance away from your truck. I am pretty good at direction in the bush but I have been turned around big time in the hills especially on cloudy days. I have a phone app for GPS on my phone but that is only good till the phone bonks out.
Situations like with these poor guys are a good reminder to not take it for granted you will be back at the truck at dusk. Hope they find them.

Looks like they called off the search.

I’ve done a few similar dashes off of my quad and into the bush without any gear so I got a small badlands bag I wear all the time now. It has basic necessities with an emergency blanket, lifestraw, my garmin inreach, kill kit. I set my son up the same, but his is a bird vest with hunter orange on it.

I carry a small hip pack with snack, compass, fire starter, emergency bivvy sack etc with me at all times now. Used to have all that in my big Osprey pack, but I found I would jump out and not take the big pack, so this one goes everywhere now.

Good idea...never heard of a compass doing that before..compass and sometimes a map, landmarks, and the sun are my primary modes of navigation..

Make it simple. I started my hunt each day by turning on the track on my cellphone app. I turned the track off once I returned to the hunting lodge. I can always go back to my staring point at anytime. Never worry about getting lost.
i hunted 12 days this trip. I had named each track as Day 1, Day 2…. I can review my trip in my office with the cellphone and PC both on to evaluate the locations.
Life is too short and time goes too fast. Hunt, hunt, and hunt....

ya I think most people have GPS apps in our phones. Shit happens, when you live up north you end up spending lots of time in the bush and tend to get complacent at times

Absolutely...I personally use Gaia GPS on my phone, works and tracks great...but, ppl still need to pay attention to their surroundings and their direction(s) of travel, IMO...
