Are grazing cattle (crown land) dangerous?

I feel dumb asking this. I suspect the answer it "Depends on the cow".

My experience is they tend to leave me alone. Pretty skittish. But still, I have to admit they worry me sometimes.

    Two things happened today.

One, I took my daughter out for the first time, she's 18, not into hunting. But wanted to get out of the house and I was only out to check some cameras. So she came along.

She asked me if the cows will attack. I said "No, we're good.", not wanting to scare her. And, it's my experience that they seem more scared of me than we are of them.

Then, while I was putting a camera back up I heard what sounded like a black bear huffing about 20 feet away. I made some noise and walked out to the trail for a better look. Just cows, they ran like a bolt of lightening in the opposite direction.

So, what's the deal with cattle?

Are there any tips for those of us that did not grow up with cattle that would keep us safer?

Or, just don't worry about them, regardless if how close they get?

    Thanks,

They can be a little unpredictable. Sometimes they are skittish other times curious. I think for the most part not dangerous. I did have a big bull one time block the road. There was mt on one side and river on the other and him in the middle of the road. I was on my atv so didn’t feel overly vulnerable. He put his head down and pawed up some dust and gravel when I got close. I raced at him a few times to get him loose or make him loose his nerve but he didnt budge. Finally I just ripped at him, swerved at the last second and veered around his hind end and passed him. The old prick tried to side kick me as I went by. If I was on foot I would have gone back from where I came just to be safe. So ya, mostly not dangerous….. just that one. Lol

Back around 1995 or 96 I was hunting up on crown land not far from Penticton.
It was the second day of deer season.
I was charged by a range bull (this wasn't a closed to hunting area, back then it was a fairly popular area to hunt).
Luckily for me there was a tree nearby.
I climbed the tree, and the bull circled around for a while, and then stood there staring at me.
Somehow, I still had my 44 marlin in my hand.
After about 2 hours sitting in the tree under a hot sun, I decided, if this bull doesn't leave soon, I am shooting it.

The bull must have been psychic, because he soon walked away.
I stayed up there for 10 or 15 minutes more, the hiked back to camp.

So if you shot it, what tag would you have cut?

It would be a tough call to make, but if you couldn’t get it away from you, you’d have to do something…

The hard part with cattle is they all have their own personalities but they mostly choose flight over fight. From a legal perspective, aren’t you supposed to get permission to hunt leased grazing land…??
Shooting an aggressive bull or cow could cause issues for future access to that range land while cattle are present.

Permission depends on whether it is a grazing permit or a lease. And then it also depends on what kind of lease.

As far as shooting someone's livestock regardless of whether you fear for your life or not you will have to pay for it. Same thing applies if you hit one with a vehicle or atv.

Years a go while out for a hunt with my dad, I was just tagging along as back then there was no season for youths, you had to be 14 to legally hunt with an adult and I wasn't of that age yet. We were walking along a old Skid road when we came around a corner and on the side hill to our right there was a big cow feeding, as we walked by her gingerly, sticking to the opposite side of the skid road. When as we moved along and the cow was out of sight to our left a calf bawled, well now it was on, you don't thing a big cow can't move... think again. We scrambled up the side hill to our right to be on the opposite side of the calf who was just on the down hill left side that we didn't see. As we scrambled up the side hill the old man jacked one into the chamber, it wasn't needed. The whole thing took seconds and the cow collected her calf and was on her way.

Years ago I was to meet somebody at the Gang Ranch. On my way In I came around a corner and there was this humongous Range Bull laying in the Ditch chewing his cud. I never seen such unbelievable big Bull before so I stopped about 70 yards past got out of my Truck to take a Picture and walked just a little bit closer. He was watching me with interests then when I was within about 40 yards he quit chewing and then all of a sudden this Beast exploded onto his Feet. Never did get a Picture but I think I took about 1/4" Rubber of my Tires to get the Hell out of there.

    Cheers

In my experience cows be harmless. Can be a nuisance on the FSR I'm traveling but they run on almost every occasion. Yesterday out for a hike on a familiar trail in an area I know has cattle. There's generally a salt lick or 2 placed by the rancher & I like to check if any antlered critters are inclined to visit. Came around a bit of a bend to where I had last seen a lick & there was Betsy hard on it, didn't notice me at all. Some crashing in the bush & another one showed up, this one seeing me standing there maybe 15 meters away. Just stared & then started on the lick as well. I watched for a bit, turned to hike back to my vehicle.

https://www.youtube.com/results?sear...n+cows+attack+ I'd say you'll be safe, With all of the cow and people interactions. Only about 20-22 people in the USA die per year. https://www.google.ca/search?q=cows+...client=gws-wiz
