    How many coolers?

    Good morning.

Opening day in a few days. We have a LEH moose draw in 7A. Have been out scouting and have seen multiple bulls in the same locations. There may a good chance of success within the first few days.

Temps are not looking ideal. Wondering how many 150qt coolers one would need to fit an average sized quartered up moose? Will have frozen milk jugs lining the bottom of each cooler.

Perhaps a chest freezer + generator is the way to go? Anyone try a Champion gen from Canadian Tire? What size of freezer are guys running?

    Thanks.

we are in 7b moose hunting right now and with the temps (29c yesterday) we opted for a large chest freezer and two of the biggest pelican coolers you can buy swapping the frozen milk jugs into the coolers when the ones in them thaw.

that being said hopefully your area isn’t Smokey… smoke so thick today near Dawson it’ll almost choke you.

funny enough we brought an extra cooler just for grouse to bring home as we saw literally hundreds last year.
this year ? Five total in a week

Our 3 trips north we took a 15 cube freezer able to get almost 2 complete deboned moose in. 1 trip to full so hind quarter was swamp back and forth. run on a generator.

Call me cheap.....we built a plywood box lined with rigid foam insulation, with room for 3 lg storage bins, top doubles as a sleeping space.
Using milk jugs for ice blocks, its a bit of a beast and came home with 1/2 of the meat that was planned for, but kept the cool long enough

capacity depends so much on weather and length of time, ice can take up a lot of space
Glad to say I have hunted Northern BC

Simon Fraser had pretty good judgement on what he found in BC

    Re: How many coolers?

We boned out our moose last year and ended up with about 400 lbs. It was just an average sized bull for region 6. I would think you would need twice that weight (80 milk jugs?) in ice to cool it and keep it that way for any period of time.
The chest freezer and gen set idea would be a better plan, as others have said, if you have the room for it.
I am going to be testing a portable cooler set up next week hopefully and will share how that works out for me. Our hunt is still a month away.
