What do you guys look for when buying a casting reel? I picked up an ugly stik combo the other day for my kid to cast from shore, but it broke on the second day.
if you had $100 or so to buy a reel for 8-10 pound test what would it be?

I would say it depends what kind of fishing you're going to be doing, if it's fish at a lake then a spinning reel would be the ticket, Shimano make excellent reels. For river fishing where you're going to be casting up stream and then let the reel free wheel to fish the whole run then for better control a level wind would be best. Good Fishing.
I have had good luck with the ugly stick spinning combos maybe you just got the lemon. For the price its hard to wrong and they seem to stand up well.

Agree with Bob. Hard to beat an Ambassadeur for a good reliable affordable casting reel. Given the size of the Northerns and Lakers in some of those lakes up there you might want to consider the 6500. Shimano Calcutta is a really good level wind but might be tough to find for $100.
These reels will last your lifetime so definitely worth the investment

8 to 10 lb line is a bit light on a casting reel I'd say, but it's all personal preference....for a kid to shore cast I'd stick with a spinning reel....I tend to stick with shimano and daiwa for spinning reels, any of their models in the sub $100 range will do the job and last years

What are you targeting?
Lots of good options in that price range.
I've used all of these without issue. If you're using 8-10lbs line, the 2500 size should be good. Some people are saying the newer pfluegers aren't what they used to be, but I've had a couple bought 2 or 3 years ago with no signs of slowing done.

what exactly is breaking? i haven't seen any reels with the retention pin you mentioned, sounds like it might be a cheaper production design....all of my spinning reels are threaded into the main gear, or thumbscrew on opposite side of the body....but it sounds easy enough to pin it again? also can get cheap replacement handles on amazon that would likely work, if you don't care about matching the colour/style perfectly
