    Dog importation to the US

In the Carcass Transportation Restrictions in Region 4 thread there were questions about the new rules for taking dogs from Canada to the United States. As many of you will have seen in the media, the CDC in the US implemented new stricter regulations to prevent the import of rabid dogs in to the US. These regulations were put in place after a few cases of rabid dogs coming from the Middle East.
There have been intense discussions between the CDC, CFIA and the Canadian Government about these changes and the last details are still being ironed out.

The latest public available version can be found here:

    https://inspection.canada.ca/en/anim.../pets/dogs-usa

    https://www.cdc.gov/importation/dogs...documents.html

    Important things to know:

    1. Your dog needs to be microchipped with a universally readable chip. In Canada we only use ISO standard chips and they meet this requirement
    2. Your dog needs to be at least 6 months of age. There is no exception for younger animals.
    3. Your dog needs a Rabies vaccine administered by a licensed veterinarian given AFTER the microchip was implanted. Vaccines given before the microchip do not count.
    4. You need to fill out a CDC dog import form which must be submitted through the CDC website.
    5. Your dog must appear to be healthy when arriving at the border.
    6. You need an export document issued and signed by a Canadian licensed veterinarian. Endorsement (i.e., stamp and signature) by an official veterinarian of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is not required anymore.

This is a fluid situation and additional changes are anticipated. Please check the CFIA website regularly for the most up-to-date information.

I get the official notices from the US on such matters:

Message to U.S. Citizens in Canada: CDC Dog Import Requirements

    July 19, 2024

Starting August 1, 2024, all dogs entering the United States must meet new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) requirements, and owners/importers must certify fulfillment of those requirements before transiting the border.

All dogs must be at least six months of age, be microchipped, appear healthy upon arrival, have an export document signed by a licensed veterinarian, and have a completed CDC Dog Import Form. These rules apply to all dogs, including service animals, and apply to land, air, or sea entry to the United States. Owners and importers will need to complete these requirements each time they cross into the United States.

Dogs that have been in countries other than Canada may have additional requirements.

Consult CDC’s website for required forms and any potential changes to this policy:

I've crossed many times with my dog. Always have all my vet papers up to date. The dog is chipped also. Never had an issue. Boarder guards are always really friendly.
Can't see that changing all that much.

Not necessarily; each country can set its own rules.

Good news: the US hastemporarily rescinded most of the requirements. Your dog needs to be over 6 months old and microchipped. You will still need to fill out a CDC form, but no need to get them signed by your veterinarian. While the form does not ask about Rabies vaccination status, most states do require a current vaccination. Note that the CDC has not ruled out more strict regulations in the next months.

Anytime that I've taken a dog across the border a vaccination certificate was needed, vaccinated within the year even though usually the vaccine is supposed to be good for 2 years.

At this moment the feds do not require a rabies vaccination certificate, but most states do. Typically the first shot is good for 1 year, the next one (if given before the first expires) is good for 2-3 years, depending on the type of vaccine.
Dogs also need be older than 6 months and microchipped. At this moment the chip can be implanted after the rabies vaccine was given, but if the CDC tightens the rules again they will likely require vaccination after the chip. This is to ensure there is no doubt about the dog's identity.

Re: Dog importation to the US

Any well bred hunting dog will be microchipped, and if not it can be done when the dog is slated to be neutered or spayed,,,,can be tattooed, as well. My dog has both just in case someone were to find her the tattoo number could be given over the phone. Mutts, on the other hand may be an issue. The vast majority are not microchipped. My dog's rabies vaccine is good for three years according to the certificate she's gotten,,,,,plus, every year when the dog gets her annual vaccinations the clinic provides written documentation of what they administered.

I have friends who have been going down across the line almost every weekend with their bird dogs for NAVHDA training, hunt tests, and/or retrieving trials. No issues so far at the lower mainland crossings from what I've been told.
