When I moved to Vancouver from the Island in 1986 I had never camped ou thunting. In fact I had hardly ever camped out for any reason other than emergency crashing by the side of the road while hitchhiking all over the world as a youth.
I realized after a few exausting day trips to Pemberton and up the valley that I would have to start staying overnight either in the back of the station wagon or in a tent and went to my local Home hardware outlet and bought a 2 1/2 pound head HB axe. I still have it. Baby it like it is my first born. I have it wrapped in an old t-shirt then in a canvas bag. Keep it razor sharp and no one else is allowed to use it.
I used to split all my camping wood with it, but now that I'm over 70, I smartened up and bought a spitting maul at Midland Liquidators.
I have an HB hatchet and it is okay for kindling, but to be honest, even for kindling I like a heavier axe. I have more control. I have hurt myself more with hatchets than any other tool. They have a mind of their own and will go flying all over the place because they are so light they bounce off thick limbs you might be trying to prune. I have another old axe on a short handle I found in an old logging setting on an elk hunt near Gold River a while ago. It too is an HB. It's got a 2 lb head, I think. I sharpened that one up like a knife too and it is a great kindling splitter.

Fiskars is the best bang for the buck. The splitting axe is amazing. I go have an old conventional axe I use for cutting smaller trees across the road though. Can't remember the brand of it.
If anyone is looking for an awesome bush tool for making kindling , cutting down saplings ,general bushcraft get yourself a BK 9 . Awesome ! I have one and love it ! Check out YouTube videos

Read Teddy Roosevelt “ The Man In The Arena “ !
Gransfors is my go-to. I also have an Ox Head which is great.
Can't argue with the price or effectiveness of Fiskars but they have no soul and feel like crap. The plastic handles get slippery too. I have one or two as loaners and beaters but rarely use them.
Hi Arctic Lake,
The Arvika has been a popular splitting axe specially on Vancouver island for some reason. We have managed to keep them in stock but they have been very hard to locate over the last few years.
Happy Chopping!
