    The loss of a friend

I just returned today from Alberta, to find my dog, a 14 year old black lab, gone. My dad tells me she was sick, and whining to be let out the day after I left, and she never came back. We think she may have gone off to find a quiet spot to lay down and go to sleep. I loved and still love my Chloe dog, she was my close companion for 10 years, my riding buddy, my partner on the long drives to each rodeo I travelled to, and a wonderful dog. She babysat my brother and me while we were growing up, and was the best friend and pet that you could ask for. I'm going to miss my darling girl, and I'm just sorry I wasn't around when she decided she had to go.

Chilko - I am so so sorry for ur loss - from past posts you have spoken of ur dear pooch and how wonderful she was - I am certain she is in a great place and still watching over you - losing a pet no matter how long you have had it in ur life is never easy but the memories you shared will be forever

    In Memory of Chloe

    Dogs Passing On

    They will not go quietly
the dogs who've shared our lives.
In subtle ways they let us know
    Their spirit still survives.
Old habits still make us think
we hear a barking at the door.
Or step back when we drop
A tasty morsel on the floor.
Our feet still go around the place
The food dish used to be.
And, sometimes, coming home at night,
    We miss them terribly.
And although time may bring new friends
And a new food dish to fill.
That one place in our hearts
    Belongs to them . . .
    And always will.

Thanks everybody for your kind words. Chloe really was a wonderful dog, she had "her" kids and she had to look after us no matter what, she was always there to watch over us and make sure everything was okay. Like I said, I just got back from Alta. today, and this will be the first time in a long long time that she won't be curled up at the foot of, or on top of, my bed to sleep.

I feel for you. It's amazing how attached to our dogs we get. They are part of the family

Re: The loss of a friend

I was standing on a hillside
In a field of blowing wheat
And the spirit of a Dog
    Was lying at my feet.

She looked at me with kind dark eyes
    An ancient wisdom shining through
And in the essence of her being
I saw a love there too.

Her mind did lock upon my heart
As I stood there on that day
And she told me of this story
About a place so far away.

    I stood upon that hillside
In a field of blowing wheat
And in a twinkling of a second
    Her spirit left my feet.

Her tale did put my heart at ease
    My fears did fade away
About what lay ahead of me
    On another distant day.

"I live among God's creatures now
In the heavens of your mind
So do not grieve for me, my friend
As I am with my kind.

My collar is a rainbow's hue
    My leash a shooting star
My boundaries are the Milky Way
    Where I sparkle from afar.

There are no pens or kennels here
    For I am not confined
But free to roam God's heavens
    Among my canine kind.

I nap the day on a snowy cloud
    Gentle breezes rocking me
And dream the dreams of earthlings
And how it used to be.

The trees are full of liver treats
    And tennis balls abound
    And Milkbones line the walkways
    Just waiting to be found.

There even is a ring set up
The grass all lush and green
    And everyone who gaits around
    Becomes the Best of Breed.

For we're all winners in this place
We have no faults, you see
And God passes out those ribbons
    To each one, even me.

I drink from waters laced with gold
My world a beauty to behold
And wise old dogs do form my pride
To amble at my very side.

At night I sleep in an angel's arms
    Her wings protecting me
    And moonbeams dance about us
    As stardust falls on thee.

So when your life on earth is spent
And you stand at Heaven's gate
    Have no fear of loneliness
For here, you know I wait.
