I prefer 10X, but it depends entirely on where and how you hunt. 8X may be a better overall choice.

    I prefer 10X42's.

I read somewhere that the human eye (pupil or whatever recieves light) can only open up to something like 5mm. So the 8.5X52 with an exit pupil of 6.1mm sounds great and you are getting more light but your eye can only take up to 5mm or something like that. Just what i read.

Depends on where you hunt. Open country 10x, Heavy timber/brush, short range 8x

I have actually had both models plus the 8.5 x43 in my hand and for me the 8.5x43 was the best. They were lighter than the 52's, more well rounded for hunting than the 10x and to me were more clear at low light. I am actually looking at buying a pair of them in the next couple of weeks. They were just as clear as the big 3 and at half the cost, I was impressed. The only thing that was a bit of a concern was that they just come with a strap and case, no lens covers, not a big deal, but now you know.

havg a pair of 10x i would prefer 8x. especially with the objective size your talking about. 10-42 is a little harder on the eyes.
bighorbob is correct. the best binos for your eyes divide the magnification to the objetive sizeshould equal five.
7-35, 8-40,10,50etc. larger objectives only help when light is dimming drasticly. and remember for every power of mag you go higher the less light is absorbed by you lensesso for instance a 10-40 would not transfer the max light to you eye causing your eyes to strain a little. if you use your binos a lot you will notice this strain .hope it helps

    Re: Minox review

Well guys I picked up a set of the Minox HG 10x43 today from the post office. I would like to thank all you guys for helping me make my decision.

I bought these from the states for $499US this was for there "demo" meter version from NY.

My first impression of these bino were "like hell they were demos", if you took a look at it you would have thought they were new but they say it is was use. It still had it's original packaging, tags and comes with a leather case and neoprean strap, a 30 year warranty.

Looking through this glass it is very sharp edge to edge, it is very light in my hands, and optics seem equal in quality to the swaros, elites, leupold GR or at least my eye can't tell the difference between them. The metering is only good out to 50 meters and is rather accurate estimate of distance to an object. This shouldn't matter because I'll be looking at distances greater than 50m anyhow. The only negative is that it only came with the eye piece lens cover.

Overall I'm happy with my purchase and would recommend this to people at this price. The shop that I delt with provided average customer service, and don't communicate very well through e-mail. However since the servicing will be done through Minox, I don't have any issue with the shop or service, value wise I'll let you decide.

Thanks again the info, and helping me with my decision.

PS - Can anyone recommend a good harness and lens cover?
