Other than passing advice from other hunters I am in the process of learning how to hunt on my own. Sometimes i feel like just a guy with a gun walking in the woods but afternoons like the past couple have really got my juices flowing. It is really true that the more you get out the more you learn and find. Today I think was one of my best afternoons, after finding some sign a few days ago I returned to the area to look a bit more closely. Hiked to the top of a cut block to find an old, old logging road that i hadnt seen on any maps. It had become a deer highway! Trails, tracks, rubs everywhere!! I followed a trail a ways until i discovered at least 3 beds in a section of bush well out of the cut! I placed a camera up the trail above the beds, ill let it soak for a couple of days. I got out of the area as soon as i found the beds, hoping not to stink up the place too much, on the way out saw more droppings! I think i know now where they are hiding, where they are coming out, where i can set up to get a nice uphll position/downhill shot. I do have a couple of questions tho:

Do deer usually bed down in the same place?
Do they have afternoon and night beds?
Does deer crap start out green then turn black?
Do deer tend not to crap on their trails?

This track is about 3 inches long and about the same width.

Deer poop when fresh is green and moist looking then goes darker when dried out
Deer crap anywhere's they crap every three hours
Deer bed down in spots that they can see around and smell the winds.
Same spots different spots but when you find a spot that has beds they are popular
for a reason.
Find trails made by deer, then follow them for a while.
Trails go to water
trails go to feed
deer tend to bed on high spots or just under the lip of a ridge to watch below.

Nice find! I am still trying to have that same breakthrough moment; sounds like we are in similar situations. I found my first fresh rub the other day, in a place where I saw two velveted up mulie bucks earlier this year while scouting. But there was only the one and it was pretty weak, I'm guessing a small buck trying it out for size. Also not many tracks around although I did see a couple does. Wondering if they're moving somewhere else with the season, although this was below the snow line by a couple hundred feet elevation.
Good luck in your new honey hole, hoping to hear about a big victory!
