Got a draw there for any bull last year and hunted ass off for about 10 days. Called in only two, with no shot, and saw only one downed by some lucky road hunter who got to his moose about 30 seconds before we did. Buddy lives there, and hunts the area to the west quite a bit, and he has certainly noticed a drop in numbers......

Haven't seen very many myself. Pretty poor year for moose up around PG. Looks like the cariboo is the place to go for moose!! I hear moose are falling like cattle to the slaughter up around 5-02 country! Moosin

Isn't that funny how that works(this is a generality in all hunting that I see). Guy from the coast head to the interior and the interior people head up to the Omineca/Peace region.

I've been lucky enough this year to draw bull LEH in 7-15. I've been out as much as I can and have seen a lot of cow and some calf but have yet to spot my bull. Sounds like above the university is the place to sneak into with my bow. i'll be giving that a shot over the long weekend.

My hunting partner and I got extremely lucky this year. We stopped our quads on the road to glass over a valley, and noticed a 2x3 bull was walking up the road toward us at about 120 yards away. And the rest is histoy

I would agree, seems like less sightings in the area of 5-2 where we hunt, we did manage to get a couple but it was not easy and what we are noticing is if we see cows, there are no calves.
Something that interested me was the amount of Grizzlies we saw, actually more than moose, I have hunted that same area for about 30 years and was used to seeing Grizz maybe one every other year but this year we sighted 8 different Grizz in a one week time frame and only two black bears.

How many people who comment on the moose numbers actively hunt wolves all winter ? Just curious.

GoatGuy

Inventory work conducted shows several moose populations in Regions 5 and 7a are down between 50 and 70%. Shouldn't come as a surprise if hunters aren't seeing as many moose.

why they still have a calf season is beyond me...kill em off before they can grow and breed...likely just about dollars and cents than sense....

So in about 3-5 years you had a 50-70% decline; let's go through the variables.

Grizzly bears: considered stable to increasing, slow growing species, can sustain harvest rate ~5%
Black bears: considered stable and have been lightly hunted for about 30 years, can sustain a harvest rate of ~10%
Regulated hunter harvest: consistent and managed through LEH ----- checks off quads, access, cameras, equipment, people learning to call, internet
Calf Season: has been going on in 7a for over 30 years SUSTAINABLY and there is no calf season in Region 5, which has seen the same population declines
Unregulated harvest (poaching and First Nations): unknown - quads/access could be contributory
Wolf population: expanding and growing at a rapid rate. Can sustain harvest rates between 50-70% without affecting population.
Salvage logging: can increase predation risk, reduces thermal cover and can increase hunter mortality, although regulated hunting is controlled

Just a few things to consider when forming 'opinions'.

No kidding. Just got back from walking the dog and there was a cow with two calves in my front yard :D Chances of that happening tomorrow, when calf season is open? Approximately nil.

Did the reg 7a BCWF guys miss the memo on this?? And that calf harvest is insignificant (<3%)

heard a rumour about changes they supported regarding calf season.
