I haven't posted on here in awhile and thought i would give a brief update of my season.
I was able to fill my moose tag early into the moose season with a tasty young bull. I never did any more hunting until last week when I took off for a six day solo sheep trip. I hunted hard for 4 days with little luck, just a couple small rams and about 18 ewes and lambs. On the evening of the fourth day, I met up with a guy from work who was also hunting solo. He was switching from sheep mode and was talking about looking for moose. So I said I could go with him to a spot that another partner told me about where we have both packed moose out of over the years. I told him its a tough hike and will take two days to pack one out if he was successful. He is a seasoned hunter at 59 years old and a good walker, he said lets go. So the plan was to call at this remote beaver pond for a few hours if nothing i would focus back on sheep and if he got one I would help him pack until it was done.
After a brisk hour walk in the early morning we arrived at the pond. I started calling then napping wake up an call again lol. I called for about 2.5 hours then a cow way behind us joined in for a bit. She got quiet after about 15 minutes , then we heard what we wanted. A bull grunted his way towards us and appeared at the timber about 180 yards across the pond. Joe peaked around the branches we were sitting behind and looked back at me and said hes "huge". I finally was able to get a look without blowing our cover and yes he was. I counted 4 on the brow on the one side and Joe did the same. He said he was going to shoot so plug my ears. The bullet from his 7mm mag hit good and the bull staggered, it was still standing so he took one more to make sure. Thats when this huge bull decided to run strait into the pond and die 30 feet off shore. After some cheers and hand shakes and maybe some cursing in reference to where he died we headed over to get to work lol. I said i would take a swim, so we built a good fire then I stripped down and in I went. I told him not to take any nude shots , because the water was cold enough not to be very flattering, thats my excuse anyways ha ha ha. I drug the moose as close to shore as I could then we both pulled him as high as we could. which only got his head out. We decided to get his antlers off and take them out to the truck when we went to get the come along from the truck. It was decided it was to cold to deal with where he was.
After returning we pulled him out deboned and took a heavy load out each and hit the truck about an hour and a half after dark. We went back in for the next loads the next morning, we put the sacks in a clearing so we could study them well before approaching. Everything looked good so we finished another heavy pack by mid afternoon and my partners moose was all at the camp. We were a couple happy hunters. I was so glad that I was with this veteren hunter when he took the biggest moose of his hunting career. He was a great packer as well without one complaint the full two days. We had a really good time and will reflect on this story for years to come.
The bull green/rough scores at 200 2/8 and only with a 1 4/8 in deductions it will hopefully hang on to be entered in the B & C trophy records. I think it will, points were 13 x 14 and he had a 57 5/8 spread. I will post more pictures of the hunter once I ok it it with him. Here's a few of the others for now.
Cheers and happy hunting everyone
Mike
