I'm always pretty cautious when it comes to pulling the trigger on bears. I'd hate to shoot a little one by mistake. What do the experts think about this blackie?

I'm no expert, but that bear appears to have lots of "ears and legs", and isn't very thick, similar to the one I passed up this spring.

looks like a little guy to me.
i'd probably pass if I was a bear hunter.
but to each his own, he'd make a nice pair of gloves or a hat.

i havent hunted bears in a long time but when i did i always used the rule of thumb that if you have to question if its big enough then you should pass on it. The truly big ones there will be no question.

Should be asking how we became "experts". My first two bears were definitely part of a learning curve and based on that experience l would say that is a smaller rather then larger bear.

Perfect amount of pepperonies and smokies, and after all, a dead bear is a dead bear, it does not eat moose calfs!!! Shoot it, eat it, poop it out!! Moosin

Jelly is right. This little bear was about the size of my lab. Very likely less than 2 years old. No sign of a sow as I watched it from about 10 yards.

The point of posting was simply to get people thinking. Good to see there are so many here who could judge it right away..:-D

Is there such thing as a meat bear?

I hope there is. Not like there aren't that many running around.

Exactly!! Sows are dropping triplets on a consistent basis up north here. See twins almost all the time! Shoot em, make em sausage, and help out the ungulate population while yer at it!! Hell get Bowzone Mikey's beans 'n' burger recipe and shoot 2 every year!!! Moosin

Great thread. I like to read these, because you can have disagreements, but both are right. Kill the bear, it is legal. Let it go, it will get bigger.

I don't think I would want to shoot it, but in front of a laptop, it's a lot easier to make that decision.

Last fall, I had a bear walking towards me while I was BT hunting and I was asking that very question: shoot or let go? Bear made the decision for me by bolting away.
