View Full Version : Gorgeous 6x7 elk dead and unclaimed in Squamish River Valley

I was out running the dogs up the Squamish Valley and ran into another hunter. Right away he asked me if I'd seen the big bull elk dead just off the road. I hadn't, so he took me back to see it. A beautiful, huge, 6x7 Roosevelt bull elk crumpled in a heap 55 yards from the road with its tongue hanging out and no apparent trauma save for a thumb sized hole in the hide just behind the ribs.

Bullet? Battle wound? Ungulate hari-kari?

There isn't usually cell service for 20kms but I know of a cell bounce that usually works so I drove a couple kms and called the RAPP line. I gave the details and received a call from a CO within 20 minutes. I told him where it was and said I'd stick around to help. An hour and a half later he arrived and we walked over the the dead bull. Several hours and about 30mms of rain later we figured out what happened.

Tomorrow morning, some photos and the results of our riverside autopsy.

Heli-logged in there a while back, some truly remarkable animals in that valley. I have a gorgeous 7pt shed I recovered from a sandbar up river on my mantel. Sad to hear of one going to waste.

why?
so it's sad if an elk dies by battle, doing what they naturally do, but it's freakin' awesome, high fives when a hunter blasts them dead?
I don't get it.
this isn't a human or a loved one.
hardly worth making someone sad, maybe greenepeace.

Ok, Aheny postponed the suffering of figuring out how to post pictures. I thought the facebook trick would work but I must have done something wrong. He is posting to dropbox and I'll post shortly.

So, the story:

When the CO and I approached the bull it didn't seem to be long dead. Rigor mortis had set in but there was no bloating and almost no smell. Given the hole that was visible on the rib cage I figured he had been gut shot and ran a good distance from the shooter before he died. There are two LEH winners out there, I was hoping the shooter was one of them and the story would have a happy ending. The meat looked very salvageable at that point. The CO called one of the LEH holders on his drive down from Whistler and the guy hasn't been hunting yet. He couldn't get in touch with the second one.

We rolled him over, both of us expecting to see a sizeable exit wound but the underside was completely intact. It was also a bit warm which indicated that there was some spoiling on the lower half. There was about a cup full of blood under the body. We looked for other wounds but only found a good scrape with a bit of blood on his left shoulder. At this point we are starting to believe it could have been a battle induced wound but there was nothing obvious about what would have actually killed him. Lack of smell and bloating pointed away from a perforated digestive system and there wasn't much disturbance in the ground around where he lay to indicate a big battle.

When the CO started to skin him we found another dime sized hole in the chest, just left of the brisket. Definite trauma around the wound, but not increasing in size as you would expect from the penetration of a hunting bullet. He pushed his finger in as deep as he could and the hole remained about the same diameter.

As we yanked hide off the shoulders there was a long bruise under the hide on the left side. The meat was dark red/brown and we guessed that it was the result of some blunt force trauma. All indications now are pointing to a natural death and we're starting to feel pretty good. The CO from Whistler was chatting with the other CO that showed up from North Van and was hopeful that they'd be able to chalk it up to natural causes and close the book.

Then, after we'd pulled out the guts to inspect the hole in the ribs from the inside we started to look at the organs. First, the CO noticed that the liver was not all intact. Then I noticed a hole in the heart. Drawing a line from the hole in the ribs to the hole in the chest we found bone fragments consistent with bullet damage. It seems that the bullet entered at the chest, went through the heart and exited the rib cage. It was either a FMJ bullet or the bullet failed to expand. I'm guessing the former, because there was absolutely zero sign of the bullet expanding or blowing up.

Needless to say, the mood went from hopeful to completely sour in those few seconds. Some scumbag thought it would be cool or exciting to shoot this magnificent animal for no reason at all. They couldn't have planned to poach the meat, the kill was too close to a roadway and elk of that size are hard to hide.

It was also tough to swallow the COs decision to leave the carcass for natural predation to take care of. Naturally, I was hoping to salvage some meat and make the best of a bad situation but he said he felt it best to leave it to the critters. After a few hours work in the pouring rain it was a tough decision to hear but I understand the guy with the badge has to make the call.

The only bright spot in a miserable afternoon/evening came just as we were getting into our trucks. The CO from North Van saw shapes in the adjacent field. We all brought out binoculars and sure enough, it was 7 cows, a calf and another bloody huge bull. Too dark to count with certainty, but we all figured he was 6x6 and every bit as big as the bull we'd just walked away from.

If anybody hears anything on this, please PM me and I'll put you in touch with the CO.

What a waste, and what a loathsome person who shot it.

Curious though. What would have happened if the OP had returned to the site after the COs left (like any animal might), hacked off a rear leg and returned home with it?

Are there laws about scavenging?

It seems to me if the CO decides to "leave it for the critters" then it is fair game for any animal to eat some of it, including a human. I know I am probably wrong about this. If I am, then under what section of the regs would someone be charged for scavenging meat from an already dead animal?

Wow, what a terrible story. I wonder if it's possible that the other LEH holder shot the elk somewhere near there, but it ran and died where it was found? I think talking to the other LEH holder is the next logical step. If he/she did not shoot the elk, then all I can say is pathetic. Such senseless poaching can only be the work of a total idiot scumbag.

I know a trappers license lets you take road kill for bait purposes, not sure it it covers poached animals. I'm assuming a poached animal becomes property of the province.

Rackem
10-01-2013, 12:34 PM
It's sad, because someone shot an animal illegally and left it, which gives legal hunters a bad name because in many unenlightened peoples minds, poachers and hunters are the same....

It's sad that a human did not get the joy of eating it.

It is sad the animal is out of the gene pool.

But death itself is not particularly sad, we all do it some day.

As far as I can tell from his posts, Duallie is not known for his tenderness and sensitivity.

It's not a waste, because nothing in nature is a waste...it all will be consumed and recycled.

I asked about the antlers and the CO wasn't entirely clear what would happen to them. I've since asked by email if I can retrieve them but I don't have an answer. I've since been told that the animal becomes property of the province and the rack will probably be auctioned off for conservation.

Maybe a bad bullet (I've read some mixed reviews about TSX opening properly!!) from an aboriginal hunter or the other LEH hunter who shot it and lost it? Or bad identification by some buck fevered hunter who thought it was a deer and lost/left it? Or just plain poaching...

I would doubt that the other LEH hunter shot it. Judging by the fact that it was shot straight through the heart and the way that it was described I would assume it could have gone far making it an easy retrieval for the LEH holder. That said I could easy be wrong.

I think the CO was going to try to get in touch with the other LEH holder.

What I don't understand is why the poacher didn't take the rack. It would have been easy enough to take it but not the rest of the meat.

Prolly shooting animals to see how powerful their gun is. Gang banger wannabees.
Drive by shooting, these people are sick in the membrane.
This is a criminal act against the laws and regs. 25 thousand dollar minimum fine.

Check the LEH regs only 1 draw. Maybe 1 untold to the Squamish nation, but some of them feel they don't need a draw. Have heard it with my own ears some of them might take one this year anyway, don't believe the law applies to them. Like Steve says , should have put a trail cam up. Sorry, I'm with Duallie. I haven't read to the bottom yet, so I don't know the results, but this is only sad if it was poached and left to rot. A bull killed in a battle with another spectacular bull, or by a preditor is not sad, it's nature. It's the stuff nature shows are made of.

Not every every dead animal that doesn't end up in someone's freezer or hanging on a wall is sad, it's how species exist, survival of the fittest.

Now obviously knowing the results, that is was shot, that's sucks, but I stand by Duallie on natural deaths.

I'm surprised sometimes by how little some people know about animals. The bugle teeth in an elk are ivory. They are the incisor teeth. . And it isn't just Walrus' and elephants that have ivory, Narwhal tusks are ivory too.

The elk bugle tooth is treasured as both a trophy by the hunter and as an offering of good luck and long life to those who receive it as a gift.

And Ivory is composed of the same tissue found in any other mammalian tooth, Dentin. The term "Ivory" refers to a tooth that holds commercial interest and is large enough to be carved or engraved.

However modified Ivory incisors are tusks not teeth: And yes I did some research and teeth are definitely enamel and tusks are definitely Ivory: Worked for the faculty of dentistry and we had three dentists that researched tooth composition and strength: I got to find out a bit more than I wanted to know about teeth.

Why a tooth can't be ivory is because Ivory has no blood supply and therefore has more in common with a fingernail than a tooth: Tusks are technically benine tissue and ivory is very resistant to rotting: where as your teeth are very much alive and can die and rot:

Amen to that bro.

until you learn how to respect animals, you should quit hunting, because with that kind of statement you just made, shows me you are just a cold hearted idiot!

This just makes me sick to my stomach when hearing stories like this. Yes most of us have been trying for these draws for years but it seems like we have a better chance at the lottery but leaving this animal there is just wrong. Maybe if it had been there a while, ok.
When it's still warm though, the meat should be used. There is ALWAYS someone out there that can use the meat. They're going to go back to pick up the hinds now?? Let's see if that happens.
That takes time and manpower. When they had three people there to begin with was a the perfect time to quarter him up. Sure wouldn't have taken long.
It's a total shame and waste of such an awesome animal. He deserves better!

From Wickipedia...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivory

The chemical structure of the teeth and tusks of mammals is the same, regardless of the species of origin.[9] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivory#cite_note-9) The trade in certain teeth and tusks other than elephant is well established and widespread; therefore, "ivory" can correctly be used to describe any mammalian teeth or tusks of commercial interest which are large enough to be carved or scrimshawed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scrimshaw) (crocodile teeth are also used).

Also from Wikipedia...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elk

The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benevolent_and_Protective_Order_of_Elks) (B.P.O.E.) chose the elk as its namesake because a number of its attributes seemed appropriate for cultivation by members of the fraternity. A representation of the majestic head of the male, with its spreading antlers, was adopted as the first badge of the Order; and is still the most conspicuous element of its copyrighted fraternal emblem.[74] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elk#cite_note-BPOE-74) A prized possession of many members of the B.P.O.E. are jewel encrusted, gold mounted elk teeth – which are actually ivory.[75] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elk#cite_note-Teeth-75)

Personally, I don't find them particularly attractive...looked at a lot of jewelry and belt buckles online...I guess perhaps as a memento of a hunt or something...

Yes it is. Did you happen to see any sign of yotes/wolves while you were out? We were hoping that the carcass would expose the wolves in the area.

Lots of tracks but I had my kids and didn't climb down. If you want it for wolves or yotes I'd pull it into the woods a fairways.. That section of road is busy busy this time of year with hunting and fishing. Most animals would be coming into it after dark.

OK thanks guys. We have seen wolves in the forest around there but they are still pretty elusive. I thought they would be in there after dark but I figured it was worth a shot to ask if you guys had seen anything.

Just wondering did the co take the antlers . I have heard sometimes they take them just so no one is tempted by the trophy .

My dad was just at a job in cranbrook and was doing some hunting and found a set of 5x5 elk antlers someone had cut off and left, he got in touch with the CO he came by and checked them out and gave him the ok to keep them.
