Awesome find PG. Huge bases on that thing. How old do you figure that is? Think he is still kicking out there?

Having a great time following the thread again this year. Your past threads were a big inspiration to me starting out a few years ago for sure. Thanks for keeping it going.
I just realised I have a pic of this antler hanging off the head of the live buck from 4 years ago . He was with the buck I'm after now . I'll post after the fights are over ! I'm sure he's dead by now .

I'm 100% confident this shed is THIS antler on THIS buck 4 years ago !!!!! I nicknamed this old fart 'Baseballbat' back then , never saw him. Now finding his shed I know why as I NEVER hunted the hill it was on then , check it out. What do you guys think?

Yep ,all living in big mature timber. Most bucks living in alpine during the summer,or sub alpine. They don't even know what apples are. I packed up a bunch , they walk over them.:?

RayHill

I had a bunch of apples on the ground in front of my trailcam years ago and the deer wouldn't touch them either. Lots of pics of them smelling them but not one bite.. A deer on the island would eat his face off in a pile of apples

Bin kinda 'lacking' here a bit. We have a 'blacktail deer hunting' page on facebook that is getting fairly popular. Piss loads of new pics daily , check it out if you can.

... A deer on the island would eat his face off in a pile of apples...

Not all apples are considered "Equal" even by Island deer
We've tried lots of different varieties from many trees over the years.
Some are like "Crack" in that they simply RUN to gobble them up, often when the truck (or backpack as the case may be) is still in sight.
Others have been left literally for weeks until they rot away.
Same areas...
Go Figure. Deer "Connoisseurs" :-D

We have a 'blacktail deer hunting' page on facebook that is getting fairly popular.

"Fairly Popular" ain't the way to describe it Steve! LOL!
Indeed Well Worth checking in on...
Wife is now suggesting not the first thing I do when back from hunting, nor perhaps the last thing before heading out every bloody morning... http://forum.flybc.ca/style_emoticons/default/Idunno.gif

Keep On Keeping On Buddy! Hope you do indeed collect The One you are after!!

This is also true on the island.. Well at 2000 ft or better. Got video of them sniffing and walking off.

Its not going as good as it is for you !!! lol , great buck !! nice bases!
I'm lacking in does. 3 does on cams , over a dozen different bucks. Largest two maybe 125 , 130. 'Slow and steady wins the race'. I cant believe how much more I learn about my spots and what/where the deer come from each season...after you 'think' you know 'everything' about your spots already. Makes for new fun, excitement each season , nothing boring !!

So today my hunting partner and i hit a spot thats usually good this time of year. Quaded as far as we could then set out on foot. Buck tracks everywhere. I couldnt keep track of them. Didnt know which ones to follow. Lol...anyways, turned the next switch back and these monster tracks started showing up in and out of the slash. My buddy looks at me and says...theres no moose up here is there...? I said.i dont think so. So he goes off a bank to follow a set of buck tracks that just made a fresh rub on some alder trees road side and i carried on up the road to get to our spot. I could see that the crest of the hill was coming up so i slowed dwn. Popped my head over ever so slowly to see a black lump in the middle of the road. I think to myself deer...!!! I put my binos on it and what do i see...... A 50 inch tri palm ****ing moose sleeping in the middle of the road. I couldnt believe my ass. Pretty rare for the pemberton area.. ! Anyways just thought id share that as I watched him sleep for 20 mins then called to him. He stood uo and didnt look happy. It was the highlight of my day for sure as we only saw 5 does and a million buck tracks.

I have been hunting real hard the past week . Lots of pics of buc
s , video ect. I have zero time , lol. The blacktail deer hunting page on fb is going off , close to 800 people I think . Posting on there is real easy and instant from my phone .to post here takes time in a chair at home ( time I'm struggling to find at home ) . "Sign in" to photo bucket , load stuff " sign in" to Hbc , load stuff, TIME , aargh lol.i have been posting 'as I go ' with my phone instantly and easily on FB . So are a LOT of other people on the page .
'Quick' report - got the massive two point on a video setting g trail cam , new 4 and 5 point bucks . I have been on the ass of Godzilla which is litery a sadistic hike to get to and is taking its toll ( damned no snow ) , found a shed from a 160 ish buck , and ran an arrow through a 5x5 yesterday !!! I'll try for some 'time' to post stuff soon !!

After taking a few years off from blacktail sniffing I went out to Harrison on the weekend only to find super high snow line, limited fsr access and only old poop/tracks. Will be up high in the dark on Wednesday-can't wait.

West side but lots of ATV/Quaders too zipping low down. Lots of active logging around Hale Creek and 20 mile bay but no hauling. I was on foot most of day except for mid day transit in my pop's Jeep. Man Harrison West fsr is still pot holed to death. Ugh I didn't miss that.

NO TIME !!! aarrrgh....... time -time -time..... its a killer.

Our FB page has been getting hammered on by pics of unreal blackies , very cool ! Side note , I have been adjusting a cam all fall 'trying' to get a clear pic of a certain buck.So far he's mastered the 'blurr' , the 'too far' , the 'too foggy' , the 'too quick' , the 'too hard an angle' , lol...oh and a 'ONLY a back fork pic'. Well , I got him on vid setting on a new trail , took 24 hrs. He's a bruiser for sure , prob regressing. He's past his ears and twice the height , and quite heavy. His fet are about as big a foot gets for a BIG buck.
New's on Mr. XXXLL , he refuses to 'come down' , he's staying up there until BIG snow dumps- period. I have had 4 cams on two of the only trails he can use to come down to where I have his pic and sheds - but he ISNT gonna do it and neither is his friends. I have the 'opposite' on the cams , deer coming down then going right back up. Its almost like they go to their wintering hill , see there's hardly no snow ( which is needed to knock feed to the floor) then turn around and head back up to where the food is.
I hiked up 3 times now , blew him out of bad at 40 yrds and he took off to Oregon. I have been nervous to go back up as I DONT want him to change up his habits - been too long a chase. I can only pray for a dumping from hell real quick !!!
See if this vid link works.

Worst yr in a long time for my partner and myself. We put the time in and didn't deviate from what has always worked for us in our area's.We've harvested numerous B-T bucks over the yrs including 4-points as I did last yr,my partner the yr before, lots of 2/3 point bucks.Only yr worst then this was a few back when we had the timber wolf in our area.To recap....no doe's,or bucks spotted!!! incredible.Little fresh sign other than a few sets of tracks, very few rubs in the usual places. What was different this yr??NO SNOW TO PUSH THEM DOWN.Oh well that's hunting

Yeah I went out today to a spot that at this time in years previous has been trompled by deers, I did not see a single track, actually I did see one old doe track.... But I'm still going to cry myself to sleep.
Just when I thought I had the *******s figured out, they elude me again, on the plus side now I know a section of 2-6 they aren't hanging out in so that narrows it down a bit :-?

Say what ever you want.... a big part of hunting is luck. You can increase your odds but it's never a sure things....

This year has been one of my worst. I've had years past where I've gone without harvesting a deer, but in those years I've hardly hunted... maybe 5 days all season... This year I put in a ton of hours and km I've tried different MU and regions.... and I just havent connected with a legal animal... it is what it is, sucks, but thats how it goes sometimes... Im not done yet, but near.. and I'll be stoked to get a jump on it next year!

a little luck is always needed....

And I've heard from many that they've experienced the same this year... but it also seems that many that are connecting this year are doing so with some fantastic animals... great to see such fantastic animals going down.... congrats to all!

Same for me ... this year has been BRUTAL ! Ive seen 2 mature bucks and the first one was a 2 point I passed and now desperately wish I had taken. The other was a monster in the fog at last light that I couldn't get a shot of on. I never hunted him again because I was on other deer.

Im going to go look for him at first light tomorrow. Going to be some massive praying to the deer gods tonight ! Man we are getting down to the wire ... I havnt fired a shot this year

I've searched high and low been Banged, bruised and disappointed with Mother Nature! A guy just has to pound harder and come up with new approaches and venture that much more! Opportunity is where you find it! If it's meant to be it'll happen. That's what makes a great trophy!

It will help, somewhat, but we really needed some storms. Very little snow up

^Agreed x2^Won't be moving much to preserve heat producing energy, and the cold makes the woods too noisy to effectively hunt them. Gotta wait for the earth and leaves to be soft from rain, or the snow to have pushed them down and made the woods quiet.

Ok. So right now I am in camp and am packing a rifle to work hoping to see a monstrous blackmail I've seen twice now... but not gun the previous times. Had him at buck shot range :( hes something of a huge 3x3, 4x4 or 5x5. I just couldn't tell with so much bone moving around.

I've got two days left! I also have some poor pics, shaky video and a shed off him. Between us and the elk I believe he has gone back up the hill. Ill throw up pics of him (hopefully sitting beside me) and his rubs which are very impressive. Seen one on a 13" Adler. He was still rubbing last weekend.

4 days left till end of season...

They are definitely still rutting ! and they DO drop where they rut - unless they are driven to a wintering ground by snow and it doesn't snow enough !

Keep the faith Steve.
You'll get 'er done.

yep ! good thing is NOW I know his 'rut hole' way up high( if it is a light snow dump for fall) and I know his zone he frequents when there is enough snow to drive a migration.
I have an antler from both zones......so , basically his time is limited. Last 3 times 'up' I was less than 100 yrds each time from him. This is epic as the chase started 4 years ago.
The problem is not enough time. The majority of my time this fall was spent learning and not actually 'hunting' him. 16 cams were used for my top 3 bucks all fall. I only had 1 on cam , the others didn't come down. But it took the whole fall to figure that out and as well ( while shuffling cams/hunting the usual hangouts) begin a whole new 'persuit' in a totally different area . Luckily it was the 'right area'.

So , this fall I gained much missing info on these bucks. It has been a complete mystery where they grew the goods - that mystery solved. ( huge)
It has taken me 6 years of 'trying' to find 'THE' trails that are used to fill my spots - mystery solved ( huge).
I also found another buck/blood line of a mid 160" class blacktail - HUGE handy !!

I also learned the serious impact the snow has on hunting success in two of my best spots. MASSIVE impact.

Anyway , I can not complain the slightest. The gained info this fall basically has wrapped the net pretty tight around 3 or 4 bucks who are enormous. Next fall I go into it with all the above loaded in my arsenal which means ALL the time I spent collecting my info this fall will now be spent HUNTING each buck directly. ooohh sooo good ! lol

Side note , my total physical sightings for individual deer this entire fall was 4 bucks and 3 does - that's IT! , 1 dead , 2 video taped.

Also keep note , where I hunt there isn't a big population. Guys see 3 times that in a day up the Pemberton Valley when conditions are good.

PG,

When you took the video of that monster 2 point and didn't drop him I knew right there that your heart and soul were in the right place. You walk the walk buddy, and that's what this thread is about. It's not "how to hunt" and shoot any ol buck {even if it is a beauty like that 2 point}, it's about hunting "Trophy Blacktails" and seeing you pass on bucks like that one, as well as others, helps us all in our own pursuits of the "Booners".

I don't know too many friends of mine {including myself} that would pass on a dandy buck like that but maybe, just maybe it will slide into our heads the next time we encounter a "nice buck" when we're out hunting for the "monster" we know is there. I know I'm gonna try but I can't promise anything.:mrgreen:

I like your style man and am looking forward to next year when we can all gain even more "knowledge" from you and others who love this kinda shit. Your a damn fine hunter Steve so thanks for everything from this year {and past years as well}.

This thread is the ultimate hunting experience! Just like when you're actually hunting, things don't quite work out exactly like you'd hoped or planned. By the sounds of it, PG had one his most successful years ever with regards to learning about his area. He still got a beauty buck, got to share his experiences with everyone, and we got to see everyone else's trophy blacktails. We didn't get the ending with the largest BC blacktail ever, but that's hunting. It should be noted that these threads should always have the disclaimer, "To be continued..." If there is anything I learned out of the thread this year it's that the work started years ago and might not pay off till the next. This thread is "Trophy Blacktail Hunting 2013" but the 2013 is really only a chapter number in a much greater story! Happy Holidays everyone and see you next year :-D

Thanks for sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm for blacktail hunting. It is much appreciated. I think some of the most valuable things I have learned from your threads is that it is about the experience, not the end result ...and that it is critical to set your own standards for success, not follow someone else's. Wether or not you eventually connect on a "record" blacktail will have absolutely no bearing on my life at all, but your passion is something I know I will be able to draw on for inspiration for years to come. Thanks for sharing so freely!

Had a pretty good second last day of the season. Has been a tough season here with the lack of snow and late rut. And guess what? The bucks are still rubbing like crazy.

1hour hike up to my first camera. Lovely little travel area always has rubs. Noticed a large rub 8yrds infront of the camera perfect! Check camera, 6000 pictures!! What?? Turns out the camera went blitz taking pictures and filled the memory card and making it useless for weeks!!!!!!!!!!! I did catch the culprit though. Area is littered with fresh rubs. Couldn't connect today. Thick area. He would have had to been 10yrds or under to get him with the bow. He is not hanging out in a bow friendly area. Hiked for 8 hours and went up high into the bigger timber and snow. No sign of him up there. Picked up and old 4x with eye guard shed. Young deer but good genes.

Thanks for all the positive feed guys !! Once again , (for new eyes) this thread isn't about 'any person'. All it is about is getting the focus BACK on what is too commonly being missed - the sharing of knowledge and the passion - that's it . And hopefully as many people as possible jump on this train and share the shit !! That's it .... I have noticed for a long time ( years) that far too many people are loosing 'time' to being 'entertained' by hunting shows ect and not learning anything . 'Entertainment hunting' is only meant to do two things - market a face , sell shit - that's it . No 'hunting celebrity' is concerned about teaching and helping anyone . This was my original motivation to begin the creation of 'HowtoHunt.com' ( still building). And as well motivation for these threads .
We all need to focus on the good of our shared and very natural drive to hunt. Some want to learn how to kill a blacktail here , some want to learn how to get a beast of a buck and I'm certain that lots of people have learned from my sharing as well the many other posts from all you guys !!!
That's what it ALL should be about !!!
'Let down ' comments so far have been the only "major let down ". On this thread !! Lmao

Good luck out there !

This is, by far, my favorite thread to follow on HBC. Every year for that matter. The wealth of knowledge you have and so unselfishly share with the rest of us is nothing short of incredible. The fact that you put the amount of effort/time into these ghosts and are still learning yourself is proof that BTD are the hardest deer to consistantly put good ones on the ground. That's why we are so fortunate to have a fello hunter like yourself that is willing to pass down all this "hard learned" knowledge. You hike the mountain, pack the gear, brave the elements, set up cams, etc, etc and then choose to pass on everything you've learned. Koodos to you ProGuide! The world needs more unselfish people. Thank you very much for your generosity.

Lmao

Good luck out there !

it is a very informative thread. and a lot of the info can be related to other species as well.. I share a common passion for hunting and also a common outcome, no monster down for me either! but that meant I got to hunt all fall. looking forward to seeing more monster blacktail pics in the months to come. congrats on a successful season.

Thanks for the Ride with this thread again Steve. Very cool to follow and learn. Wish I could frequent an area like that. Maybe some day. That said these local BT's came pretty darn close to waring some SSG jewelry ........ close but no cigar for me on the Local BT ........ but things I learned will help me hammer a Blackberry Black Tail next year .... gonna be sweet. Good luck on your production. I look forward to it. As many other are too.

This has been about the toughest blacktail season I have had in years seen fewer deer than I care to say.

My buddy and I did get one buck each but nothing to post pictures about.

This thread has been a super learning curve for me = due to it I now hunt areas I used to just drive by.

Now that the season is over unlike some of you I'm not going into hunting withdrawal due to this last snow/cold spell and my quest to find where the deer went I found an area loaded with mtn lion and bobcat tracks yep going calling soon...

Wife thinks I'm staying home now not...

Steve, I want to thank you as well for this thread. Passing on the knowledge of how to hunt is an invaluable gift you are giving to not only new hunters but seasoned bushwhackers too.

In a world of taking, you are giving and I appreciate your dedication in passing on what you have learned.

... If we ever meet, the first 5 beer are on me.

And I'll offer up the next five! Although with Steve it seems we don't have to ply him with booze to get the Real Stuff out of him. Apparently it is in his nature to SHARE! :-D

Over the years I have learned a substantial amount from these threads. Yes, I had a fair amount of on-the-ground experience, but Steve's suggestions and advice helped me Up The Game a LOT, and I do believe I have become a more proficient Blacktail Hunter as a consequence. Shows for me in the number of encounters with Big Boys, and the ever increasing size of those I am fortunately able to take each passing season. Combining what I know with what he presents here will, one day, allow me to collect that Biggie of my Dreams... This I Truly Believe...

So Steve, Many Many THANKS for the Generous Sharing of your adventures out there, and the many tips and tactics you have so freely slipped our way. They are Very Much APPRECIATED!

I look Immensely Forward to next season, and following yet another of these Fine Threads through-out my own pursuits therein...

Cheers & THANKS!
Matt

For those guys that go hunting solo, and need to keep the camera on themselves this is the easy way of doing it even when far away from the camera... I just found it on Youtube looks like a cool toy!

I whipped this quick vid together. I 'tried' to get as many pics from our blacktail deer hunting FB page as I could but I think there's close to a thousand now, its got quite popular and people are joining every day. close to 1200 people and not one bit of 'crap' goin on , pretty cool. Maybe blacktail hunters are VERY patient people?? lolol...
Anyway , thanks for good words all !! we all share the same shit , we'r all equal !!

British Columbia — Starting at the Washington-British Columbia border, blacktail deer range runs west of the height of land between the Skagit and the Chilliwack Ranges, intersecting the Fraser River opposite the mouth of Ruby Creek, then west to and up Harrison Lake to and up Tipella Creek to the height of land in Garibaldi Park and northwesterly along this divide past Alta Lake, Mt. Dalgleish and Mt. Waddington, thence north to Bella Coola. From Bella Coola, the boundary continues north to the head of Dean Channel, Gardner Canal and Douglas Channel to the town of Anyox, then due west to the Alaska-British Columbia border, which is then followed south to open water. This boundary excludes the area west of the Klesilkwa River and the west side of the Lillooet River.

"northwesterly along this divide past Alta Lake"

Hey guys do they b and c actually have a physical map of this line through the whislter area. I don't particularly care one way or the other but I am sort of curious as to where it runs through this section...
