Hey,
Going on my first elk trip to the west kootenays next week. Picked up a power bugle tube, and a cow/calf call. Anyone know if the bulls are going to be in full rut by early October? What kind of bugles should I try and produce at this time of year?
Any other over all elk tips would be much appreciated as well.
Thanks

Prime time to be out there right now. Bulls have been going off for a long time. Don't be intimidated by the thick stuff. Lots of places the rhodo/azalea is so dense and high you only have 40 yard windows to shoot and can only see the top half of their bodies. Don't get stuck being idle, if he's not coming to you, make a move on him. Unless you have trails cut, it is nearly impossible to sneak in on him without making noise so call as you walk. Making noise isn't necessarily a bad thing. Depending on what he's doing and how far away I am dictates what I'll do. Sometimes I will try and close a few hundred yards without calling until I think I'm right in his bedroom. You can usually get him fired up that way.
