I'm thinking about going BB hunting next spring and would like a little help in judging bears. Especially bears on the larger side. How big do you think these bears are in skull size as well as how many feet? Bear number three isn't the greatest picture but let me know what you think on all three.

Bear 1

None of those are worth shooting if you are measuring skulls. IF you wanna eat a bear its fine, but totally not in the right area( looks like an esturary)

I agree, not that big. The ears don't seem too far apart for one thing.

Bear 2 looks like the biggest, maybe 6 ft and change, but not a big noggin on it. The other 2 may possibly go 6 but these are just my estimates, and by no means any sort of an expert.

Whats bear 2 standing in front of? Rib cage of some sort?

Do people ever eat coastal bears? What do the outfitters who hunt in coastal areas do with the meat?

Define coastal.... It's better to choose a bear via its diet.

I would have to disagree. I think there are some nice bruins there. You can't judge a bears skull that accurately... I've shot bears I thought were huge and end up being meat heads and score poorly. Some of the skinny looking bears end up being the biggest.
If you see a bear that looks like a black polar bear, I'd advise you to shoot:)

A bear living off a beach diet which spends most of it's time eating shore crabs, sand fleas, salmon when they are around, as well as some berries and grass.

The bone/meat head is always a coin toss til you learn the area and if it has the genetics of one or the other.
Neither of those bears are crankers but the last one is a nice bear and def better than average, you should kill him for field judging knowledge first hand and then kill another one next year just because you can.
I bet they all taste like shit given the location though so if you don't want a rug, I'd leave him alone.

These bears are on Haida Gwaii so the hunting season for bears is closed till spring.

Id be betting a light 6' ish for them.
I like the pic of the bear laying down, cool face. But he looks skinny.

As for the meat, its all sausage and pep... My buddy drilled one a few years ago from the flats in an estuary,,, sausage and pep ate well, but not the best. Good enough that you might convince yourself that it would be a cool "Trophy hunt" But not a meat hunt..... Your kinda eating it because you shot it.... This time of year for eaters you should be hunting blueberry patches

Anyone else think Bear #1 and Bear #2 are the same Bear?

The first two pictures are the same bear just taken from a different angle.

Bears are tough to judge, and pictures make it really hard to tell because you have no reference to other object's around them. But agree, not bad bears but skull size not trophy class. Ears generally stay the same size, so if they look small and on the side of the head vrs on top, likely a bigger head. Also a flat head or a crease between the ears generally tells you it will be a lot of bone vrs muscle on the skull. But long lanky bears vrs short fat bears, head can look different size compared to different body types etc. Length of hair can make it hard to tell body size as well, long hair makes them look a lot heavier than they may be.
For sure rug quality on #1 is poor.
