Our family built a 'cold' smoker about 10ft high shaped in a 'D'. It had a 2x4 frame with the flat front covered with plywood and the curved sides and back out of corrugated metal roofing. The top was also covered with the corrugated material, but there was open spacing left around the perimeter to allow the smoke to escape. There were several sliding racks accessed by a small door at the top of the flat front. The fire was accessed by another small door with a adjustable draft at the bottom of the flat front. It worked very well for several years, smoking salmon, trout, and whitefish, until my youngest brother piled too much wood on the fire and left the draft open. The creosote lined walls sure made a fantastic inferno, kinda burnt the salmon a bit:oops::eek:.

Most oldtime smoke houses were not lined: If you use a heavy enough cladding and wet down the sides before you smoke you should have no problems fire wise:
How fancy are you thinking? are you going to bring in a 110 volt outlet for an electric heat source or are you thinking a fire box?

Let me see it when you build it? My grandpa built a wooden one about three by three by three, and about five feet tall. It was made of thick plywood, with 1x1s in it for the oven racks to sit on. He had a firebox in the bottom made of cast iron, and a half inch gap around the top for smoke to escape. He would wet it down prior to smoking stuff.

IF you can pull some conduit out to it from the house and put in an exterior plug with a ground fault: not need a wooden bottom just bring the walls down to either a poured slab or some of those large patio slabs: This will keep the critters out and give a non flammable and heat resistant base:
When I lived in the Charlottes/ Haida Gwaii a lot of people built smokers out of old fridges the same way:a hot plate with a cast iron frying pan used... except most of the fires were from shorts it the extension cord which gets hot. and sometimes burns... That is why I am suggesting a hard wire with a dedicated circuit: I am sure one of the sparkies on this site can tell you how to do it:
Please take pictures
And all the best of luck!!!:-D

If anyone out there is looking to build one with an electric hotplate, I can set you up with an electronic controller that will keep your hotplate on and regulate the temperature so you don't end up too hot or too cold. PM me and I can send you a drawing.

Mine is about 6ft tall and is on casters to move around. I have a 1500watt element for an electric conversion smoker from gas. I drilled a hole under the element to run the cord directly out of the smoker. The element has a metal reflector and the cord comes out the bottom. I have the element raised about 2-3 inches from the floor so all that is exposed is a couple of inches of the cord that came with the heater. My smoker also is plywood-rockwool(2inches)-plywood. This holds the heat and is cool on the outside.

For controls i use a johnson controls digital thermostat. You can set the hi-low and differential. I dont use this for the smoke, only for temperature. I use a bradley smoke generator on the side for smoke so I can control the amount of smoke even on low temps. I then have a wireless sensor that has a meat probe and a smoker sensor so I can monitor from in the house without having to open the smoker or even go outside except to change the cooking temp.

I just finished building mine i'll post some pics later. Mine is 2'6" by 2'6" by 4'6" and that is plenty big. I lined it with sheet metal i got from a guy who builds comercial freezers, probably similar to furnace ducting. I also used 2x4 construction and I insulated it with roxul fire rated insulation from the hardware store. I rigged up my own temperature controller for not very much money, I found all the instructions on the internet. Just finished my first smoke on the weekend I am able to get up to 235 degrees which i was hoping for to do ribs and brisket and such. I havent made any sausage yet but i think i should be able to get at least 50 pounds in it. I did some chicken and ribs for dinner on Sunday and they were amazing!

Well I built a smoker 4ft high 2 FT deep little over 2 ft wide , electric burner sittin on the bottom , my issue im not getting a lot of smoke from wood chips . Seems very warm in side still need to add thermostate tomorrow . Just thought it would be a lot more smoke. Might have to get a bigger burner?

I left a truck canopy behind at a house I was renting once. When I went back to get it the new tenants had decided it would make a good smoker. Needless to say, it was ruined as a canopy.
