This hunt started with a call from a farmer friend of mine. He asked me how I would like a nice corn fed bear. I jumped at the opportunity to get some tasty bear sausage meat. I called my son to see if he wanted to accompany me, but he had a prior engagement. A quick call to one of my hunting buddies set the hunt. The land owner advised me that the bear was a clever old fellow who only came in just before dark. A plan was made for me to cover one end of the corn field, and for my buddy to cover the other end of the field. Our hope was that he would not outsmart us and come into the middle of the corn field from the other side. We arrived at the farm at about 6 PM and quickly set up. The wait began. The sun had set and it was getting to the point that I felt he was not going to show. I started to gather my gear when I looked up and there he was, walking right at me. As he turned to enter the corn I put a 250gr. sabot from my .50 cal Traditions Buckstalker through his left shoulder and into the lungs. Of course I didn't see which way he went because of the muzzle flash and the smoke, but I heard the moan. It is really hard to reload a blackpowder when your hands are shaking. Ron quickly joined me and we set out to find him. It wasn't a hard track. He went 20 yards and piled up stone cold dead in the corn patch. We were able to get the truck close enough to pull him out. He was huge. About then the farmer showed up and offered to help load with his skid steer. He said he had never seen a bear that big around his place. After a quick stop to show him to my son we headed home for the work of skinning him. Pics to come.

Best to use photobucket. Www.photobucket.com. Free account. Upload pics there. Click on pic. Copy and paste IMG code (4th of four choices) into HBC thread. Easy as can be.

I am going to do the skull and mount it. I am waiting for cinnamon or blonde bear for a new rug. Already have a nice black on the back of the couch but my wife wants a colored bear.

Great bear! The hide looks quite rubbed/ragged from being old?. Judge not lest ye be judged thyself. The skull will look great on the mantle. Measurements will be interesting should make honourable mention if not book, and taken with blackpowder probably book. Well done, sir!

My intention in taking this bear was not to make money, it was to help out a friend with a problem and to obtain some quality meat for sausage. I am fairly sure that just about everyone here hunts for the sport, the meat and time in the outdoors. Money does not come into play.

It's your bear, do with it as you wish.....

I don't hunt to make money either, though I'd not throw it away if it were layin' on the ground at my feet. Skull should look good though.

Thanks guys. I figure he would have been 400 to 450 live weight. Ron and I put a rope around his back legs to try pull him out of the tall corn, but all we did was straighten out his legs. Had to use the truck. I will be scoring the skull once he's dried some.
