So today I finally got a chance to get out. We had a baby Friday Sept 13, so up till today, I have either needed to be in cell range in case we went in to labor, or at home helping momma adjust to having a new born and a 3 year old. Anyway, mason was at daycare today, and the wife had a friend from out of town coming over at 2pm, so she said I could go do something which meant I could go hunting, as long as I was back in time to pick up mason from daycare (5pm). So its noon and Im on the fence about going, Im telling myself its the wrong time of day, I won't even get outta the house until 1, which means Im not hunting until 2, have to leave by 4 to come home. Then I shake my head and wonder wtf am I thinking...of course I am gonna go for a hike with my gun at my side. Ive had my eye on a certain hillside for years now, but never bothered to get on top of it, so thats where Im gonna go today. If nothing else at least I will get to put my boots on some ground that have been calling my name for a while.
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i472/GNalleweg/038_zps378e1f22.jpg (http://s1095.photobucket.com/user/GNalleweg/media/038_zps378e1f22.jpg.html)
So I pack up my stuff and help the wife with some last minute items and away I go...get in the truck and holy, I almost forgot the bullets for my new rifle. Now as per my style, I am going totally unprepared. I got my knife in my back pocket, by bino's on my chest, my cell phone, and my rifle+bullets. I don't have any expectations as its 21 degrees, its 2pm when I get to my spot, and the bush is noisy walking. I start climbing the hill and holy frick, I am a fat ******* that is so out of shape. Usually I am hiking long before opening day and because of work I am at least somewhat in light hiking shape. Anyway 100m up the hill I jump a doe outta this meadow

she bounds off, no time for a pic or anything, but hey, Ive already seen a deer 2 minutes in. That's great. Day is already a success.

I get to the top of the first rise, and wow, this is sweet.

http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i472/GNalleweg/036_zps45d2927f.jpg (http://s1095.photobucket.com/user/GNalleweg/media/036_zps45d2927f.jpg.html)
Why did I wait so long to get up in here? Too bad its absolutely the wrong time of day, and I probably won't get back here at the right time of day until late october or november. Oh well you never know. The wind sucks though, its switching and swirling, there is no right direction to walk, but thats ok, because no matter what there was only one way I was gonna go...UP. I have this notion, right or wrong, this is it. The deer live or hang out on the top of hills, bumps, mountains, whatever. Thats my notion, and I'd rather drag a deer down than pack it up, so I always go up. Now the grass is crunchy, the bush is loud, and its hot. Im going slow, trying to be quite, but again I have no concerns since Im more exploring that hunting. Up I go, up and up and up. There is deer sign everywhere. Yeah its old, but hell, its only september, Im thinking late october this is my new spot. Finally I get up to the top and I stop for a breather. Let my heart rate drop, my breath catch, and my body to settle. Ok, lets get going. I walk around on the top for about 5 minutes when I find an old quad trail! Sweet, I can probably get my Rhino up here if I had too, but who knows where this comes out. Now I start walking this trail cause its way quieter when I decide for some reason, nah. Off the trail I go, I get ontop of the little bump and yes! A swamp like watering hole possibly, this means that there is a great chance there is deer here even though I have already seen lots of old sign. All of a sudden I hear a pop. I freeze, but its kinda blowing a bit, so could be anything, then another noise comes from just over this little bump in front of me. There is something there for sure. So now I am in creep mode. Im waiting for the wind to pick up and taking a couple careful steps. I do this a couple times, I pop the covers off my vortex vipers, and I stare into the bush. Its kinda think, so Im looking hard, being very patient not sure if it was in the dip below me or on the far bank when all of a sudden I movement. Deer, I keep staring then BUCK! Are you kidding me? 40' away tops there is a buck. Up go the binos, down I go onto my knees. Its thick. 1, 2, 3, definitely a 3 point, got good mass, stay calm. 1, 2, 3 shit, 1, 2 3, come on...4! Yeah, solid 4x4. Now my mind starts to race. Where am I, what time is it, its freaking early in the season still, but man deer chops at moose camp, how sweet would that be. All these things are going through my head. Who can I call, where am I? Its the biggest mule deer I have seen in the bush, now thats not legendary, for the amount of time I spend in the bush deer hunting, I have really never seen a monster. My biggest buck on my shed, is the biggest buck Ive seen outside, 140ish. Now Im thinking about swampdonkeys mule deer that he posted...its not quite that big, his fronts are a bit weak, but hes got great mass on the frame, the fronts just don't fork very low...amazing what goes through your mind in a short time. I am sitting there watching this buck at 40 yards, he has no idea Im there, but Im also worried about the swirling wind. I look for openings in front of him, if he will browse into a shooting lane, yeah its there, hes actually on the trail I just left, but hes stuck feeding on this 1 tree, and its tough. I can see his rack, I can see his face, and I can see his rump. OK, hes a shooter, Im gonna take him if I get a shot. Then he freezes, he looks right at me. Busted! I know he just caught my scent. I haven't even brought my rifle up because there really is no shot...its too thick. And hes gone. He huffs at me, and bolts. Huffing as he runs away. He stops about 100yds I figures, and huffs again, and again. Then I hear him huffing as he leaves completely. Dang! He woulda been my best deer to date, and turns out it would of been an easy retrieval, but it woulda taken time that I probably would of had in the heat, but not ideal. Anyway, that was day 1 for me. Totally a success, and I found a new spot. I'll keep this thread going for the moose adventures that start Oct 1 with our shared hunt and any more deer outings I get in between now and then

So the wife let me get out again today, and even a bit earlier. Was pretty stoked to get back into the area I discovered the other day. I get into the first spot I have my eye on, and I am checking my trail cam with much anticipation, but I am totally let down with a big 0 pictures. Then all of a sudden a deer busts me. I never saw it or heard it bust out, but it definitely was snorting at me again. Makes me wonder if its the same 4x4. Anyway, up I go, up and up and up. Past where I stopped last time, partially because I didn't realize I was just on another bench. I found some very nice ground, and another water hole, but no animals today. I did however find this massive poop...which I believe is a deer, it didn't look like moose at all. Anyway, pics below. What do you guys think...big deer or funny shaped moose turds? Figured I'd share another view of the grasslands below me with you as well as this bird house I found nailed to a tree on top of a mountain with no roads in or out. I found another one on the ground prior, but assumed a bear had transported it there for some odd reason. No luck today, not even a doe. Oh well, great exercise.

Great poop, but without a scale for the key, we can not confirm the dung. It looks like a "Master" gun lock, key which is roughly 42mm, so I would say those guys range from 28-32mm. That is some premo dung.

the ket is a standard masterlock key. Probably 5/8" diameter easy. Regular deer crap beside the beasts! That'll keep me going back to that area

Deer droppings. Dry and aged, (visible cracks) Hard to tell for sure from photo only, but I would say muley. Not moose! Moose droppings (except spring and early summer) are shaped exactly like dates and about the same size for adults, and a little smaller for juveniles.

Oh, and congrats to both of you on the new angel in the family!!! Looking forward to the rest of the story this season.

yeah, definitely aged, Im starting to suspect that this spot is a late season area...but Ive seen 1 4point in there already, and if they start to gather in there later in the season thats just fine too. Hopefully the big boy will return :)

It could very well be a good spot in late season. But judging from the photo, the droppings are from 2 different deer. (large and small droplets). Probably doe and her fawn. Look around the area for possible feed sources which may be attractive to late season deer. Example, tree lichen (old man's beard). If you see lots of this in the area, there's a real good chance that the area is prime habitat for late season mule deer. They love to eat that stuff in the late season.(late fall and throughout the winter)

Of course as you already noted the odd deer could be there anytime of the year. Good luck and shoot straight!

Mule deer don't have that much quantity of manure, it's smaller amounts.
There are moose behind Batchelor by Mud Lake. Across from the McQueen Lake Sign.
Depends on snow depth up Watching Creek by Porcupine Ridge (6000ftlevel)
Opax Mtn is optimum hunting country.
That poop is weeks old. Anyways more pix.
This isn't deer country and you might think you know where Im hunting Jel, but you don't. Im not on Opax.

judging from the photo, the droppings are from 2 different deer. (large and small droplets).

thats no doe, those droppings were massive. There is deer crap all over the area, and lots of lichen, and even a watering hole and some gulleys that are super lush and green right now. I am surprised there isn't more deer in there right now, but its pretty crunchy walking until we get some moisture and/or a good frost. Thats kind of why I think its a later in the season spot. I found tons of rubs as well, but they are all old, even older than last year I suspected. Will deer continue to rub up until the rut, or just to remove the velvet and shine up their antlers in september?

hunterdon
09-27-2013, 01:27 PM
Sounds like you found a sweet spot bud. Yes deer will certainly rub as the rut approaches, and taper off at the beginning the rut. By that time they have let potential ladies know that they are ready and available anytime:-D. All those last year rubs indicate you have a good number of bucks and the area should be quite hot just before and during the rut, and a little less post rut.

brian

Will deer continue to rub up until the rut, or just to remove the velvet and shine up their antlers in september? In my experience deer will rub well into the rut. Early it is too remove velvet, later it seems mostly like they're just pissed off at small trees. They probably rub less as the rut progresses, but hey every buck needs to get out a bit of aggression every now an then.

So today is the eve before the 2 moose shared hunt LEH. The family showed up yesterday around 3, and we loaded up and headed out to setup camp. Sorry I forgot the camera! So no pictures with this entry. I was surprised that we managed to get everything in the truck. First time loading my SxS in the back of my truck, but the measuring tape told me it would fit, and fit it did nicely. So stoked. 2 trucks, loaded to the hilt, and off we went with my little guy (mason), my dad, and 2 of my uncles. We didn't get to the spot until 8pm, but managed to run into some people in a truck that were not sure of where they were, but after a quick chat with them I told them to follow us and then gave them the final bit of directions for them to find their destination. I love being able to help a stranger out on the back roads, and when its starting to get dark, Im sure they really appreciated the reassurance that they were on the right road. Anyway, we get to our spot, and I quickly show the old guys how to setup camp, and help them unload and organize for a bit, then homeward bound me and mason were. I was saddened to see some idiot torched a car on the lac du bois road in the 3h time span that I had been gone. Anyway, the big adventure starts tomorrow with opening day, and I will not be forgetting the camera this time. Im hoping to get my dad and one of the uncles on 2 moose tomorrow morning, they are talking I have heard, the weather is almost perfect, we'll see what happens.

Sunday night when we were setting up camp, I brought up the topic of "what do we shoot". Do we shoot an immy, or are we hunting for big bulls? The entire camp other than myself say, if its got antlers, it should hit the dirt. I was tempted to not shoot something small, I know the area well, I know how many moose are there, and I knew that we could be a little picky, or I had hoped so anyway, but majority rules, so we drop the first 2 bulls we see. These guys have had way too many hunts end up with nothing, but they also didn't remember the 38 moose we saw last year during the spike fork season. Anway, so Tuesday morning rolled around, well it really didn't roll. I told the wife to go to bed, and I would take care of the baby's first wake up, which usually is at 11pm. Well turns out the baby didn't wake till midnight, then didn't go to sleep until after 1am, so needless to say when my alarm clock woke me at 3:30 I was pretty dang tired. So I grab my coffee and away I go. I get to camp and sure enough, 3 of the 5 people are still asleep...Get up I yell at the canvas tents, its time to go. We need to be there an hour before daybreak....so we finally get to my spot and day is just breaking, we are late...I send people to their designated locations, and we sit down and start to cow call.

http://youtu.be/YM9wcSRX_mk
After a couple hours the uncles leave the block to go elsewhere. We were hoping that the animals were talking and we would have several bulls come into our calls, but that didn't happen, so might as well split up to increase the odds. Me and my dad continue to hunt the block, we go for a stroll, and after 4 hours of not a thing moving decide lets go get some breaky. We radio our buddies that are deer hunting and tell them we are going for breaky. Once we get to camp, cook up a great breaky. After polishing that off, in roll the uncles. One comes around the tent with a big bloody bag.

. I say, "no way, thats too big for a deer liver, you shot a moose?" Nope he says, we got a huge buck. Cheers errupt in camp, high fives are given and the story is told. They start asking if there is anyone in kamloops that can score a rack. Man, how big is this deer Im thinking. So off we go, rhino and truck to go drag this deer out of the bush. (these old guys are getting lazy...rhino to drag out a deer, come on). We get to the spot, and across the block I go with the side by side. I get to the deer and it sure is a dandy, but its not a book buck. Damn fine though, biggest that any of us have had in camp.

Lots of character all over the base of the antlers, 5x6 after you count the extra points due to the extra spikes below what should be the brow tines.

So opening morning of hunting camp was a letdown with no moose talking, but quickly turned into a great morning of celebrating. We get the deer back to camp, snap a few more pictures and start planning the afternoon. I had big hopes of lots of talking by the moose as in years past, but that wasn't the case in this spot anyway. The evening rolls around and me and dad are going back to the spot we started the day in, thinking maybe something had moved in there from all of our calling, we sit on it for a while with no action again and decide to go check out some other blocks. We hit another road system and are just cruising through it in the SxS never having been there before when all of a sudden...

MOOSE! I slam on the breaks, and up go the bino's. Looks like, yup its a bull. Small bull but its got horns. No time to get organized, dad jumps out, I tell him to wait. I get out, get my gun out, load it then say ok dad, take him. Boom, dads gun erupts with a loud bark. The moose doesn't even twitch. 60 yards broadside...wtf dad. Then the moose starts running, Im tracking him and notice theres a small fir tree coming into my sight line, so I make the split second decision to shoot before it becomes an issue. Boom, my new .325wsm belches out fire and lead, down goes the moose. He piled up on a full run. Yes, we have a moose down! First time me and my dad have actually killed a large animal together, crazy as that sounds, since Ive been hunting since I was 16 and so he has been longer, just never managed to get it done together, but we finally have now. Big hugs all around then we walked up to our prize.

We gut him out and decide to leave him where he went down just to keep him out of sight a little bit, and since there is still an hour of good light left, we continue on down the road. Not 5min past the moose we come around the corner and…DEER! Up go the bino’s, it’s a buck...

Dad is already out, but he can’t find a good rest, I get out and manage to find one, but I want Dad to shoot. Im amazed this deer is still standing there looking at us. Finally dad gets comfortable and boom, the deer instantly drops, didn’t even take a step, was dead before he hit the ground. Nice shot dad I holler. More high fives and hugs as we approach a nice 4x3. Dad is now worried about how much work we have on the ground. Lets gut him he says and go back to camp. Why I ask, we got some time…we could just load him in the back and gut him later. That will keep all our gear cleaner too, so instead we form a plan to simply load him into the rhino and keep going. Well easier said than done, but done we do eventually manage to get him into the truck. We only have maybe 20 minutes of good light left, but onwards we go. We end up getting to the end of the road without seeing anything, but we do bump into a black bear on the way back to camp. Neither of us were interested, nor had a tag so we simply watched him walk away. What a great road though J. We get back to camp and everyone is wondering if we had any success since we were the last to get back. We got a nice 4x3 in the back of the Rhino we say. More high fives and right ons, then I say “man my hands sure are bloody for not having gut the deer”…everyone stops for a second, they re-examine the deer then someone says “no way, you bagged a moose?” Damn rights we did…lets go get it. I don't have all the pics here, since I forgot my camera once or twice, but the boys in the bush do, when they get back I will add more pics of all the animals.

So day 2 rolls around. I woke up with a crazy headache...musta been the smoke from the tent stove, that or all the beer and scotch. Anyway so this AM me and my good buddy reagan are gonna team up and let our dads (who are also good friends) hunt together. I haad punched my moose already anyway and reagan wasn't part of the group, so we figured we could go off on our own away from everything and look for some more deer. We hop in the SxS and head out from camp at first light. Not 5 minutes down the road a few does Jump out and we stop to have a look around. There are a pile of does in the block we take our time and have a look around. I spot a 2 point and reagan gets all excited. He grabs his gun and I show him where it is. He has trouble finding it in his scope, but he wants to take it. He lives on salt spring these days so even a 2 point is a big deer for him. I get him on the deer but then start bugging him about shooting it when we have so much meat in camp already. He reconsiders and we let the little fellow walk. We head off again, but don't see much. After a couple hikes and a couple tours, we decide its time to go eat. On our way back we joke about the high odds that our dads are back in camp being lazy, and sure enough when we get to camp they are there, camp fire going, havin a coffee. I pipe up to them about being lazy and relaxing when they should be out there looking for moose #2. "Already taken care of" they say! "What? Your joking" I reply. "Nope he's down, a big one." "That's awesome, did u gut him already?". "Yeah, just waitin on you to get back so we can go get him.". So we sit around and wait for the uncles to get back, they already know the moose is down, but went back to a block they had spotted some big bucks in the day before. They get back, we have some breaky and then head out to see what moose#2 is.

We drag him to the road, load him in the truck and get him back to camp. I then had to go back to work for 2 days, so I load up with the biggest meat haul of my life so far, and off to town I go. I did get word yesterday that they saw a monster bull, might be close to 50" wide, but no tags left! I have a few of these local big boys on film, and so I wasn't too surprised. I think if we ever get this draw again they will be more inclined to let an immy walk, and be a bit more selective of what we want to shoot. But you won't beat an immy for taste, so no regrets. I hope they had some success today while I am at work, and I will be joining them again tonight for a couple more days before they pack up. I'll continue to add to this thread as my season progresses. I still have my deer tags, and we have a bison draw for january, so stay tuned!

This moose was so great looking...a little disappointed that we didn't have a tag left. I think next time if we ever pull that draw again, the group will not shoot the first 2 they see...we saw one even bigger than this guy, much bigger, with even broader paddles. Both were definitely trophy bulls for the kamloops area.

Awesome Sith!!! Great hunt and story. Really nice to see you guys and your dads having a great time together. You named it right. "The adventures" of one Dark Sith. Got a chuckle on how the old guys were sitting at camp sipping coffee, waiting for you guys. :)
