I was wondering if going on an African Safari appeals to many of you guys? I would prefer doing more North American big game hunting ,but if somebody flipped the bill then a big Kudu would be nice,if anybody that has hunted there could give us an overview that would be great, and if you guys went and could harvest 6 animals what would they be?

I think it would be a very cool experience, but it doesnt call to me! I like hunting the critters in our back yard so to speak. As well, i like doing the HUNTING myself, when on a guided hunt your just the shooter not the hunter!
That being said..... lion, panther, cape buff, kudo, ect.

There is lots left for me to do in North america, but I intend to check out africa in a few years...

One of the prime reasons I hunt to begin wiht is that I liek to try new experiences and go to different places, meet different people...

Going to africa to hutn is a heck of an adventure, just liek going on a wilderness BC hunt is an adventure- They are just 2 completely different types of adventure...keep in mind that a "safari" will be what youmake of it. You don't have ot stand around/ sit in the truck all day and let your PH and trackers do everythig for you, but you *do* have that option if you want. :)

My top list woudl be

Cape Buffalo
Kudu
Gemsbok
Impala
Warthog

I've shared campfires with several hunters who have been to Africa, and it sounds like you get out what you put in (sounds familiar ?) Various arrangements are available, some are just afternoon drives with a camera and rifle, lots of 'comfort zone'.
The best description I heard, and the one that appeals to me, came from a gent who has been there a doz or so times. He asked 'Do you hunt G.Bear, with the thought in mind that it is a quarry that can kill you ? I said 'Yes'. He then proceeded to tell of hunts where there were always several things around that could stalk/hunt/kill you at anytime. He spoke of elephant, lion and Buffalo hunts that were ' Ball-cap-on-backwards, Hair-straight-up. piss-your-pants thrillers. The kind of hunt you earn with several visits under your belt. Kewl. Also there is always the chance of a situation arising, even when hunting the most diminutive species. Target a 12 kg duicker, flush a lion !

Did an African Safari in Namibia in 2004. Shot 9 animals and loved it. Quite the experience. Looking to go back this year or next.

I'am leaving for Namibia May 30 on a 15 day hunt for plains game including Kudu, Oryx, mountain zebra, blue wildabeast, warthog, Impala etc. I will also have a tag for leopard. This is my first hunt in Africa and I'am extremely stoked as it is coming up quick. My girlfriend is coming along for the trip, my official photographer.8-) All the people I've talked to that have been to Africa say " you can't go once".I'll be heading to Reno this weekend to the Safari club international show to meet my outfitter and PH.

This is similar to what I can see myself doing in 2-3 years. Namibia for leopard, kudu, gemsbok, eland, and maybe a couple of others.

The other might be a buffalo hunt in east Afrika with a sable added on if possible.

Truth be told, there are not that many animals that I would like to hunt in Afrika. I have no problem skipping the wildebeest, hartebeest, baboon, and such.

The BIG FIVE for me 8-)
Maybe use up the #6 spot for a Baboon or something ?

The phrase Big Five game was coined by big-game hunters (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big-game_hunter) and refers to the five large mammals (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mammal) that were sought in Africa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Africa).[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Five_Game#_note-About) The term is still used in most tourist and wildlife guides that discuss African wildlife.
The collection consists of the lion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lion), the African elephant (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_elephant), the African buffalo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_buffalo), the leopard (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leopard) and the black rhinoceros (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_rhinoceros).[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Five_Game#_note-About) The members of the big five were chosen for the difficulty in hunting them[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Five_Game#_note-About) and not their size, which is why the leopard is on the list and the enormous hippopotamus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hippopotamus) is not. The big five are among the most dangerous mammals (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dangerous_animals):

Lions (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lion) (Panthera leo) is a large carnivorous (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnivore) felines (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Felidae) of Africa and northwest India (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/India), having a short tawny coat, a tufted tail, and, in the male, a heavy mane (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mane) around the neck and shoulders.
African elephants (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_elephant) are very large herbivores (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herbivore) having thick, almost hairless skin, a long, flexible, prehensile trunk, upper incisors (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incisor) forming long curved tusks of ivory (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivory), and large, fan-shaped ears. There are two distinct species of African elephant: African Forest Elephant (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_Forest_Elephant) (Loxodonta cyclotis) and the African Bush Elephant (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_Bush_Elephant) (L. africana).
African buffalo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_buffalo) (Syncerus caffer) are large horned (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horn_%28anatomy%29) bovids (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bovid). They are the most dangerous of the Big Five, reportedly causing the most hunter deaths.
Leopards (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leopard) (Panthera pardus) are large, carnivorous felines having either tawny fur with dark rosette-like markings or black fur. Leopards are the most difficult to acquire hunting licenses (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Hunting_license&action=edit) for and are often difficult to hunt due to their behavior and their nocturnal feeding habits. Leopard hunting usually overlaps several weeks of baiting (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bait_%28luring_substance%29).
Black rhinoceruses (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_rhinoceros) (Diceros bicornis) are large, thick-skinned, herbivore having one or two upright horns on the snout.

While at SCI show this weekend, I'll be looking at making arrangements for a cape buffalo (dagga boy) hunt in Botswana or another safe country for 2008. All this Africa talk is getting me exited, can't wait.:)
