Just inherated a nice Savage .308 99c with a fixed 4 power scope that has been in storage for most of it's life. I really like the look, it is nicely balanced, light weight and the action is really smooth, I am excited to take it out and put a few rounds through it.
First things first the scope needs to be upgraded, just need to decide what I am going to buy for it... Next, I need to decide on 150 or 165g bullets, it will be my deer gun..
What are your thoughts or opinions????

Oops, should have put this in gun talk...

In my experience the 99c doesn't like light bullets.
I'd buy some 180's and start there!

Mine loves Nosler Accubond 165's. It's a great gun!

I second that. I use Nosler Accubond 165's for my 99c as well and really like it.

Thanks...... Most of the research I have done suggests the 165 Nosler Accubond as well. Think I'll pick up a couple box's and go sight it in this weekend..... Might do a little local hunting as well... :-D:-D

Well it just goes to show that every gun is different lol

Ive had two 99c's and neither one would shoot 165 accubonds, both guns would shoot anything in a 180 flavor though.

Good luck let us know how it shoots!!

Love the 99c it is the only rifle I own as it has been passed down to me. I am shooting 180 grain hand loaded hornady rounds but mine also shoots well with the 165 grain trophy bonded bear claws from Federal. I had the rifle re-blued and the stock refinished 2 years ago by Jim Ford in PG he did a fantastic job on it looks new again. Have a Bushnell 3200 3-9x mounted on it. Very reliable gun very good balance.

Hope you enjoy yours.

Weird a while back my dad picked up the same gun also with a 4 power scope, hopefully it kills something this weekend, it's actually a pretty nice old gun.

I just happen to have a box of 180s so I think a comparison between the two is in line, sounds like a fun day to me.......

I have model 99 in .308 that my son used when he was younger. For deer I loaded Nosler 150 grain Ballistic Tip....get about 2775fps very accurate and works well on deer. For moose I loaded 165 grain Nosler Partition...also very accurate and if I recall velocity was around 2680 fps.

Love my 99c in .308. Not the most accurate gun in the world but that's probably more me than it. It did shoot better when I was shooting 180s than the 150s I'm sighted in with now. Watch out for the dreaded tang crack! Seriously love that gun.

I have a 2-7 leupold on my mod 99 308 and it likes the factory hornady custom 165 interlocks. I use the the 165 for deer moose etc. never had any issues.

kind of off topic aswell but does anyone have any extra magazines for the 99c chambered in .308. I seemed to have miss placed mine and would like to have this gun up and running this season

The majority of guys I know with .308s, seem to have gotten their best groups with 165 grain ammo...though there's no substitute for range time. I'd try 165 grain Accubonds first and try 180s if they 165s don't shoot well in that particular rifle.

I'd get a fixed 4 power for it...

mind you I can't hit shit with mine. I'm keeping mine more for sentimental reasons. Did shoot my first deer with it though.

My grampa still smokes moose with 180 grain federal power-shok out of his...
