Out for my first official deer hunting trip this morning. Was super stoked, couldnt sleep, left the house about 2 hours earlier than necessary, 2 hour drive up to 'the spot'. Arrive on scene long before day break, cleaned out the back seat and caught 40 winks before heading out to the block. First light im on scene and so are the bugs. Jel once said that to find the deer look for the crows, the deer version of Jel must say, look for the flies and you'll find the hunters. The 95% deet kept them at bay, barely! After 4 hours and no sign of life i decided to move to a different spot near the only water source in the area. Sure enough when i arrive a fork skulled MD is eyeballing me. No sooner do i grab the glasses and confirm that he is a non-shooter, do i see his twin. They jostle and spar for a few minutes as i gather my gear. I try and get out of sight and a better wind position but by the time i get a view of the clearing the 2 have booked it.

By the time I pulled the pin on the day it was 28 deg and climbing, everything was hunkered down. Even the few cattle i saw on the way out were all hiding in the shade. Saw tons of tracks, coming and going.

I vote for elk. Knowing where you hang out, probably elk.

i looked at some cow tracks when i got down in the valley, they are way wider. I was thinking that myself as ive seen lots out in summer range. no patties in the area either, makes me want to rule out the milk machines.

2 and 3 are moose a young moose. As mentioned elk "toes" are generally more rounded - having said that I have been fooled with some of the younger moose tracks! I have been working on a small elk herd and just the other day successfully tracked a young moose right to his hooves making the tracks - my elk blood pumping, eyes not lookin so close and a the desire to believe can blind a guy!! To confirm 100%, look for crap... know your shit! ;)
