View Full Version : Okanagan Elk Hunt Surprise

Headed out Friday morning to try to find the elusive region 8 elk. I've tinkered around the last couple years trying to find some secluded spots but without any success. The sign says the elk are there but I've had no luck getting pics on the t-cams.

I slowly still hunted while cow-calling my way to one of the cams and found ZERO pics since my last visit. With all the moisture this year, it seems the elk have not been using wallows that they have in the past. Dejected I pulled the cam as my time for elk hunting has come to an end to due to work ramping up for the fall season.

Calvin was coming up late to join me about 9 am so I had some time to kill so I swung over to an area I thought might produce some elk sightings. When I got there I set up on a small bluff over looking a meadow with a deep pond. I made some intermittent cow calls and threw in one bugle. As the morning sun grew higher in the sky the temps began to rise and my hope began to fall....so I did what I do best while hunting.....I drifted off:).
A few moments later I was awoken by the sound of something trotting through the water. As I scrambled to gather my witts, I peaked over the rocks and couldn't not believe my eyes:shock:. All hell broke loose as I scrambled into position...I was more flustered than any other time that I remember. I hastily moved forward to get a good rest. As I threw the rifle up, the sun was coming in from the side and I could not see a thing...then I realized that my scope cover was still down:oops:. My shot opportunity was quickly leaving as the animal trotted along so I gave a quick call to get it to stop.

As the report of my trusty .270, the animal went down behind some rocks...but I could see it lifting it's head trying to get up. I thought the first shot was good but all of a sudden the animal got up and was struggling towards the bottomless pond. I fired a second shot just as it lunged forward and hit it far back. Somehow, it made a final lunge and flopped into the water. It struggled to keep it's head above water but the end was very near.

I gathered my gear and picked my way down to the pond......and this is what I found...

I could not believe what had just happened.

I've heard stories and seen tracks but I highly doubted that I would ever get a chance to take one....especially in the Okanagan.

I looked at my watch and knew my time to meet Calvin was closing in. I emptied my J-107 an managed to squeeze the entire animal into the pack.

After a 1/2 hr pack I made it back to the tracker and headed to our meeting place. When I arrived late Calvin knew something was up....and the guesses began. :-D

We both couldn't believe my luck!

So after some further conversation, we both realized why I had shot something. It turned out that Calvin had forgot the bolt for his rifle.
Me nodding off and someone forgetting their bolt seems to be a re-occurring theme:mrgreen:.

Good Job!!!!! Nice to see some fur going down, especially that kind! It never fails they show up when you least expect it. I find they always get me flustered as well and have had many a gong show encounter. Good job at making the shot count.

In my experience, sleeping is the best way to sneak up on a wolf or fox ;) Always try howling after the shot. Wolves are rarely traveling alone and more are likely close by. They will come in to investigate a howl - especially if one is missing. Mount him, up!!

Now that's an awesome surprise and a job well done! Congrats. Hopefully you guys can connect on one of those elusive elk soon. Did the bath in the pond help with the smell of the wolf? The one I got a few years ago was the worst smelling critter ever.

I'd like to take a moment to justify my immy guess......if I may.

If Brent could have provided better lighting in his image....the canis lupus would have been much more obvious. How about workin' on that?
The fact that the 'mystery' animal went for the water once it got up after shot #1....made me conclude that it was a "surprise" immy.

In summation.....any wolf that charges for water after he's taken one lead pill.....deserved what he got......dumb-azz dog.

Well I have been out three times this year and the SsS and SSS have both connected . It is know my turn . If forgetting a bolt works I will leave one out all the time . . Buddy I will drive out to meet you and help skin a wolf everyday of the week . I wish I was there to see the gong show . Coach we have a better chance at an elk as there is one less wolf :)

Not that big. Med-sized at best.

It wasn't that bad. Smelled like a stinky wet dog.
The bath sure did add a few pounds to my pack.

The best thing about being a small game specialist....is that you can't forget the bolt on your semi-auto .22:-D.

Every time you see me I seem to put you to work....packing deer.......skinning dogs...or working on my vehicles. I need to keep more beer on hand.:?

Just going to get her tanned for the pegboard. Not a pile of wall space for a rug. I like a peg board with a variety of colors and critters.

Its a baby ogopogo I'm pretty sure it is  you see, the mother ogopogos when they are ready to give birth, they leave Lake Ocanagan and migrate in the dead of night to small water ways and marshes to give birth, they remain for a few hours with the young then they head back to the lake befor sun up so they are never detected, the babies stay in the ponds/marshes and small lakes in the forest till they are about 2 yrs. old, then they migrate straight as the arrow flies by amazing instinct to Lake Okanagan where they join all the other Ogopogos in the depths of that mysterious lake, :-D.

No its not, its a baby ogopogo didn't you see the fluffy face and big nose, it will grow into that nose, then it won't look so big, thats how you can tell its a baby ogopogo

Yah, agree. Real nice colour on that animal. It will enhance any room in the house hanging on a corner.

It's my goal to try to add a bobcat and a lynx to the pegboard. Only have 3 black bears(two blacks and a brownie) on there right now so it can use a little spicing up.
My friend has 2 black bears and a goat hide in the middle on his pegboard. He calls it his "oreo". Looks very cool!

We spent a week in the area you were in earlier in November and I haven't seen that much wolf sign since I lived in Campbell River in the 70's. They did a pretty good job of cleaning out all the game there at that time and appear to be doing the same here. I did manage to get a shot at the south end of a northbound one (Texas heart shot) but he was angling away and I missed. (crap!)
