Sunday going on my first Stone Sheep hunt

Leaving on Sunday morning driving 13 hours or so, meeting up with my hunting partner who is already hunting. He said there was a big Stone taken out two days ago...

I will be driving my old $400 beater Aerostar van, hope it makes it....I need a new vehicle soon...

Staying til the following Sunday unless we bag a sheep sooner, the weather is supposed to start at 17C on the 15th and rise steadily through the week til it hits 20 by the 21st...so we will have to hustle the meat out...lows of seven at night.

Bringing a hay bale with me to continue the crossbow practice.

Will be fun regardless of whether we get anything. :) I love adventure!

Got rained out of our sheep hunt today, covered over 50 Kms on the mountains with a 48lb pack and crossbow..saw over 100 sheep, mostly Ewes and lambs and non legal rams, so no sheep dinner for me...Was awesome and beautiful, will post pics and vids when I get back into town.

He packed sixty pounds as if it were air...he is like an ant, thin but strong...He had no hip pain, and the pins look pretty cool on the xray...his knees bothered him a little on the downhills..

So I drove all day Sunday to get there, saw 14 black bears, two of which were feeling suicidal, including one just 45 min south of my destination, which nearly rolled my van, as I careened around him (and he tucked his ass right up lol) big big black bear in the dark...

Also saw three Grizz, and five Moose, nice bulls standing around in peoples yards outside Vanderhoof...

Arrived at 11pm, stayed at a little cabin for $20...

Next morning up early, sighting in the crossbows...talked to a CO who said he cruises HBC and other sites and obtains files from them....ate breakfast at the lodge...packed up and hiked the 8kms from an elevation of 2700 ft to 6200 ft with my pack weighing in at 48lbs and the crossbow, my partners pack weighed in at 60lbs plus crossbow...took 6 hours to hike it.

Once at the alpine, we set up tents, made a fire, ate our Mountain House packs and went to bed...

Wow, a white Ptarmigan so early in the year! I would not have suspected one of those (ie Rock Ptarmigan) Ptarmigans to be white just yet. I have never found a white one prior to full-blown winter, late November onward at the earliest I suppose.

Alot of this stuff with vehicles is just marketing to sell us new vehicles. As such, your Van working so well comes as no surprise... Unlike the white Ptarmigan! :D

Yeah I don't believe in new vehicles, let someone else eat the depreciation...and I used to sell Hondas at Carter Honda on 8th and Burrard in Vancouver...its mostly a big scam. Which is why I quit.

Yeah I was surprised to see a white Ptarmigan, he had some brown flecks, but primarily white. He was funny to watch, he kept "fake eating" in some kind of display...not sure what that behaviour is for...and they make me smile because they hate to fly for some reason, they will walk as long as possible, sort of sidling along, but when they fly they fly very well, so not sure why they prefer the funny little walk...

Are you not in BC? Beautiful British Columbia is on our license plates for a reason...and now that I have crossed Canada in a beater van, I can say that BC truly is the most diverse and beautiful province...

I was born in BC and lived there for many years, both rural and big city. For awhile I moved back and forth between BC and Alberta a couple or three times and now live in Alberta. Both Provinces have their benefits and unique aspects yet I am quite happy where I am these days.

I love the Ptarmigan walk! It reminds me of that John Cleese skit where he'd walk ridiculously. They are beautiful and amazing birds to be sure. Their propensity for walking has led some to believe they can't fly, obviously you know better! I suppose they do it to evade predators using their camoflauge. The Raptor birds eat them so they try to keep in cover to avoid being scooped out of the air is my idea of why they do that.

When he saw the wolverine tracks on top of his own, he ran back to the carcass only to see the bandit running off with the backstraps, it had tried to take a quarter too but they were too heavy...he gave chase for awhile but got exhausted, and since he still had a lot of packing to do, he gave up on them...but he was not pleased at all. I was supposed to get some of that backstrap too dammit! But he will give me some of the other meat..never eaten sheep, so very curious to try...

Your buddy has had a few run-ins with Wolverines stealing meat over the years.....a few years back we were on a hunt and lucky to have only small portions of bison quarters chewed on. Thankfully we had the meat hung up a tree or it could have been much worse! Looking forward to seeing his ram!

Damn wolverines, stealing my backstraps! Grrrrr! I have a sudden desire for a wolverine rug...opportunists with a keen sense of smell...I can hardly wait til he sends pics of the ram, apparently it is two inches past the bridge, but a very tight curl so it didn't score super high but still a beautiful animal, he skinned it for a full body mount...33 1/2 at the inspection.

He said there was another legal ram, and that I should have been there for a double...dammit!! I wish I was rich and had endless time for hunting...

So my hunting partner is now back ( I wish I got that much time off!) and said that I could post a couple pics of his ram...but he was reluctant due to these being a photo off of his camera screen...he wanted to have higher resolution pics...so no judgey on the quality...I will get the better ones later.

He also gave me 20lbs of sheep meat, which I am eager to taste...

Yeah his hip was pretty badly fractured, but the doctors did a good job and he is a real tough guy. He hiked like he never had any pain at all. Carrying a 60lb pack up the mountain as if it was air, and he never even used the hip strap because his upper body is so short and his legs so long, he can't adjust it enough to be comfortable. So he carries all the weight on his shoulders....


He once packed out over 200lbs of Elk meat, each trip, and I would be surprised if he weighs much more than 140lbs..

He is interesting, kind, and an amazing hunter.

He is amazingly strong, not a very big fella, he probably only weighs 15lbs more than me...but tough is right! It's a custom .300 Ultramag, so the stock might be light...
