So my son (11)tells me he wants to start shooting a bow. Well I say great, but Dad's a "bow dummy!!" What do we look at for a beginner bow that he may possibly be able to upgrade to a hunting type unit down the road?

Be gentle folks it's my first time :lol:

David, have a look at the the browning site.Browning-archery.com i know they make youth bows up to 50lbs. i think they are available in 40 and 50 lb pulls and i think they have 5 different models some may also be available in a package combo.I also know that Boormans in new west carries browning bows.

David ... Go to specialty shooting in langley and talk to Mike (the owner)... Im pretty sure that browning makes a bow that is upgradeable for when he gets bigger and stronger. A good friend of mine bought one from him and its looks great and he said it wasn't hard on the pocket book.

Hoyt makes an excellent upgradeable bow. I think it is called the rintek. My wife shoots it and so does my 6 year old grandson. Ask WillyQ about it. Mike

I have a PSE Deer Hunter and I love it. Its a 40-50 lbs draw wich is perfect if he wants to take a deer. Here's a pic. There are other colors too. It's a great set up.

All good info guys, I'll have to visit some of the stores mentioned and start asking questions there. He's keen to spend his own money, so I want to make sure he gets his money's worth.

Appreciate all the info, Cheers David

Dave if your boy wants to give archery a go bring him down to the Semiahmoo Fish And Game Club Monday or Thursday nights starts at 7 pm. They have some bows he can try out to see what he likes.

P/M if you need more info.

David...the key word for you in finding a bow for your son is.....ADJUSTABILITY!!!!! With that in mind the Hoyts and the martins offer a LOT of draw weight range usually up to 15 lbs adjustment. Draw length adjustments are key as well as he will be growing for a while yet. There are several great "kids" bows out there that offer up to 8" of draw adjustment but in my opinion they are not of the quality of an adult bow. Examples would be the Hoyt rintec or the browning micro midas. For quality and ease of adjustability i really like the hoyt cam 1/2's, they will get you 2.5" of draw length. Were the choice mine i would get him into a Hoyt with cam 1/2,with the shortest draw setting being what he will shoot right now. At his size something in a shorter axle to axle would probably be appropriate. The reflex line is Hoyts more affordable bows but they are a great value by all accounts.

Good luck with your choice!
Chris
