Quieter around Cranbrook than usual. You can actually hear the elk bugling without the purr of quads roaming around looking for cows....

We had one screaming back for an hour or so in 7b, just couldnt entice him to come out, went in at him and he went silent......slept a night with bugles echoing through the valley..

It's the 10 months of planning and focusing on these buggers that just makes it feel like a kid waiting for Christmas, that has got a sneak peak at that new Nintendo under the tree.....

Went out for 4 days in region 7-37 and have a Nice bull down on Sept 4th. Answered immediately and came in on a string. Only one we heard in the 4 days though....Talked to a guide in there and he said that they have heard a couple but that they were really tentative.

My first bugle of the year and I had a reply back within 200-300 yds . second time out saw 2 bulls but nothing answered. My son works at a golf course in town and he has heard bugling in the morning.

Nothing for me where I hunt in the Peace. I found a good elk hole loaded with tracks, I'll spend some major time in there and hopefully I can find rutting ground with signs. An hour after dark I didn't hear a sing elk in one big elk looking valley only one owl, no wind which was perfect trying locate bulls for the morning. Bed time and I hope to hear some meow meow and aaargghhhhiiiiiiouuuuuu houg houg houg houg in the morning!!!!

Scouted hard today for a guy with an Island elk draw and needs help, lots of sign, bulls are tearing shit up, pissing and just starting to visit wallows but was a warm one today and quiet. Bulls are still way in the back ends and up in the alpine here but when it happens it'll be fast and furious !

Had a bull answer back with a few chuckles yesterday morning. He didn't seem interested in coming any closer, staying holed up in some nice dark cool thick blowdown timber, don't blame him.

On second thought it wasn't a bull, it may have been the Pack Goaters yodelling up the mountain.

spent a week in region 7. Very quiet and very hot. Had very few bulls come in and heard a lot of random bugles early am then it would all shutdown. Nothing in the evenings. Seen some bulls with cows already but thinking this heat does not want to make them fight...too hot so came back busted...didn't want to risk spoilage if one did go down. This weather plain sucks ass!

Get out in the morning. Was out last sunday and there were four bulls with about 20cows in the alfalfa patch and they were starting. Called in my 5x5 from 400yrds and came by the hay bales within 30yrds of me. I let him have it and he went down nicely with no damage to the meat. waiting for this sunday to get the meat from the butcher. they are really starting up north of the peace. the moon is starting to get bright now and will be a full moon within the week.

I'm new to elk hunting and was wondering the what the moon phase had to do with any thing.

Guess it depends on the specific area I guess...Things were good at firstlight then shutdown as soon as the sun hit the trees. Evenings were a waste of time as it would not cools down. Not getting much hunting time in and too much camp time in the sun. 34 degrees where we were one day.

Was in GP today and saw a nice 5x4 that a first time bow hunter shot last night. It was the first bull he has heard all week. It's been quite for me here, although not out as much as I would like. Bulls are coming to the cow call, but no bugling. Will try again tomorrow, before the heat comes.

Cold and wet next week, should really get them going.

Cheers

Just got back, I had a bull about 150 yards in front of me at very last light, I am 90% sure was a 6 point but couldn't confirm. Tried pulling him closer but he wouldn't budge with cow calls, mews, chuckles. He was also flying solo. quiet as a church mouse.

They're definitely bugling and coming in to bugles. I know of a 7x6 that was shot yesterday by a fellow HBCer. Hopefully he'll post story and pics.

Going up to Chetwynd for work/hunting next weekend, never been up that far north before and never hunted Elk before either. Really hope we get the chance to get one bugling.

Anybody know when they stop bugling up there? Probably be there from the 20th-27th ish.

It definitely was thrilling to have bulls talking back to me this past week. Since they were Region 3 bulls they didn't have a lot of cows and weren't willing to come out of the thick stuff for a photo opt. Had one at about 40 yards but couldn't see him. I thought if they were still being vocal here, they would be going crazy in Jasper so we did a weekend trip. Was pretty quiet there for elk. Saw a few decent bulls but none really wanted to roar for us. Thinkin' most of the bulls there were pretty much done now and were laying low resting up.
