Was just wondering what others use to catch these while out hunting. Someone mentioned large streamer flies or egg pattern. we going moose hunting on the 10th. Do you ever cast flies with a casting rod? We be fishing on the cariboo river. Also do you prefer small or large spoons or spinners?

A T spoon with a hunk of moose stew meet behind used to work good.

Bucktails, bucktails and more bucktails. Different weighted heads depending on the depth or speed of the river.

For the Kootenays I use either a dark pattern (black maribou is my preference) or a lighter one (white with a streak of red or orange to imitate an injured fish or a cutthroat). I typically will throw in some tinsel that will help sparkle and add some shimmer for the sunny days.

They are very easy and cheap to tie and I have caught many in the 5-10 pound range. Streamers also work well for the smaller upper streams when they are running. I have a tougher time with the fly rod, but I've seen 10-15 pounders pulled in on the fly. Closest thing we get to salmon fishing over here.

both in the rivers and in the lakes, a heavy casting spoon, yellow with red/orange spots.
but for just the smaller ones, I've done well with a blue/silver small croc.

Float fish them with roe or deer meat or bottom bounce with the same rig and a bit of orange yarn.Just like salmon.

I use hand tied jigs the flesh colours, whites and reds, whites and orange, whites and peach, white and pinks. i just tie 3 sizes, and up to 3 colors or bead head. Usually stick to silver and gold, but have put a red, orange or white one one with a little eye. Rabbit fur zonkers work great same with cross but rabbit fur, a little schlappen or marabou mixed in.

Bull trout are an apex predator in the rivers and will hit almost anything. My personal favorites are a muddler minnow for fly fishing or spoons for gear, crocodiles and five of diamonds work well. They also take bait well. I was once having a family picknick on a trib way up the Skeena and we were throwing the bones from our fried chicken in the river and later caught a 2lb bull with a drum stick bone in its belly. They are greedy

Thanks for all the advice. The only thing i didn't have was the bucktails and I picked a few up. I want to try drifting an egg pattern or wool with a dink float. Of course I will still be looking for a moose. Can't wait to go. Anybody else heading up there for the 10th? Thanks again, keep those ideas coming.

For casting I have always had good luck with Blue Fox spinners - silver spoon with blue followed by silver spoon with red.

I don't know why, but the only place I ever had luck with that lure is in the NWT on Pike and Lake Char.

Catch my biggest ones on crocs if I'm throwing spoons, the gold and orange hammered. My biggest yet was drifting a skin coloured worm.

the five'o'diamonds is deadly on lakers.
I've never actually gotten around to using it on pike, the good old red-and-white produces too well to try anything else.
and on my last couple trips, I found the Canadian flag red-and-white was out-performing the traditional red devle.

Trolling Apex in blue works

I've actually never done that well trolling for them.
probably because I much prefer casting in the rivers or rivermouths for them instead.
even up on kinbasket, I prefer to target them at the run-offs rather than troll around.

we did get a nice one trolling a fly last year on shuswap.

I did pretty well last weak for bulls.
most were caught using a flasher with a spoon behind.
flasher was one of these, I can't remember the brand of it, but these do a beautiful slow roll.

that, with this little cleo spoon behind it.
it's my fav lure for bulls, nice heavy spoon that's great for casting and also trolls well.
and this colour is all they'll touch sometimes.

the one above the bottom right corner, the WM one, has done really well for me also.
especially in the rivers.
on revelstoke lake, I caught bull, bow, and kokanee all trolling this one.

Trolling i use nothing but "lyman lures" i fish the columbia river in Revelstoke. I target the holes where i no they wait for bait fish . We catch bull trout from 2lbs to 25 lbs. summer time is intense , the fish head up from the headwaters of arrow lakes and slowly make there way up the columbia as they feed steady on Kokanee as they make there way up to finally spawn late fall.. There is times that i dont have enough time to launch a boat , so i throw a red and white or grey and white buck tail on and cast and jig the holes . For spoons i use a kamloopers or daredevil or a 5 of diamonds. Im still trolling the river and its pickn up again as the spawn is almost done for most bbulltrout. so i troll "lymans " and do alot of catch and release . End of the month is coming . So time to gear up for the illusive Gerards that are lurking in the upper and lower arrow lakes. To many things to do fish/hunt but not enough time.

I forgot to mention a hotspot flasher with a hoochie is very effective too!

I'll echo the lyman's while trolling. Mid-october on we drag them with no weights.

Also had a bit of luck on weighted white marabou flies in rivers while using shooting heads. The char family like white.

Forgot the net so used a stick that Dad kept in the boat for sticking under the motor when it was tilted up.
