how many of you guys have taken an animal up Sylvester road in mission? I took a drive up there today and I realize there are lots of people around but its such a huge tract of land, there has got to be game up there in the middle of the week, I did see some game today but they all had boyfriends with them, but im talking about 4 legged game. There is no way there isn't an abundance of deer and bear there, what are the opinions of the guys that go up there more often?

Sylvester road is only good for one thing, burning gas. U would be lucky to see something. If so post some pics.

When the snow hits back there you will see lots of tracks. Roads might be over grown now. High up in the hills east of Salsbury lake there are a few medows. I have seen deer in them. I have also seen deer by the lake just before dark. Hard to hunt area with all the quads and shooting. And to answer your question I have taken lots of deer along sylvester road. Just not up where it turns to dirt.

At first glance I would have thought a WT.....

I hit that guy with the 12g 2 3/4" SSG. He ran about thirty yards and jumped a fence. I looked for blood. Got to the fence. He was laying on the other side deader then a rock. Every one says he looks like a whitey. I have shot a few three points and that one is the coolest. Very knotty at the bases .

This photo is evidence again that a pure 100% blacktail is closer related to the Whitetail than the Mule Deer.

For many years the Columbian Blacktail Deer has been considered a subspecies of the Mule deer, however recent DNA testing has proven this not to be the case. In Valerius Geist's informative book Mule Deer Country he explains that by testing the mitochondrial DNA (the mothers DNA ) of the three species (blacktail, whitetail and mule deer), researchers have now determined that it was the mating of Whitetail does, and Blacktail buck's, that gave rise to the Mule deer and not the opposite as was once suspected.

As a new hunter, everything I learned from species recognition would have have said white tail. Can someone explain more? Maybe picture comparisons?

I have seen Mule deer up there, half way up Stave Lake. That Black tail was shot in Hatzic Prairie. It is shotgun only,No single projectiles. The mountain side of Sylvester Rd is rifle. You have to get permission in a lot of those areas.

My brother shot a BT and one side looked like a WT and the other a MD. It had us scratching our heads. Like GH says, look at the tail!

Yes it is. But a lot of the deer I have shot were in farmers feilds. They seem to like staying a long the black berries. Hazel nut trees they love.

What happened? The left side fall off after he fell? The right side busted or shot off?

Bullet hit below the base of the antler. The left side must of been broken from fighting.http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/medium/Takla1_ruger_1_0022.jpg

I was under the same assumption. So many places giving different ideas on what is what. DNA doesn't lie, so I am going with that !

I am just about to go get me a hammock for sleeping in the woods.
Wondering what others are using.
I think it's best for overnight trips. Small, compact and light.
Rather then lugging a tent.
Hammock, tarp and sleeping bag should be to golden trio I think.

Check out Hennesey hammocks, they're based here in BC... Richmond or on the island or some place... I have one of their systems... I haven't used it for hunting yet, but I have used it on a cpl 3 day hike in fishing trips and I found it to be fantastic.

I was driving through the main mess area around 6 am, right after the davis lake turn off and amidst all the targets and shot shells I busted a 2 point and 2 does feeding. I was pretty surprised to see deer in the middle of the war zone.

If youve been there you will know "jennys point",havent been in for a couple yrs as the road into it is \was totally grown in,but theres an old cut-block at the end of the spur that always holds deer, especially early.thats probabley where the 2-point and girlfriends were heading

Saw a very healthy 3 pointer there last year about 10 days after the season closed. He was only maybe 4 or 500 yards up the hill from the large trashed clearcut where all the rednecks were testing all of their new Christmas presents. Accompanied by a couple does.

Back around June I was heading up to do some plinking/cleanup up there and just before the first spot where people shoot (4km I think) there was 4-5 deer coming up from the lake and up into a cut block, I'd never seen a think up there before that

Once I was up there shooting just a little ways past the first spot and after a while we realized we were standing in an old gut pile.

Thanks for the insight from experience 'Pipeliner'. Where is a good place to turn off the road along the east side of Salsbury Lake to get to those high meadows? Are they accessible by forest service roads or do you have to hike in? Either way, what latitude and longitude?
