What are you guys on the Island using? I am settled on Vortex Viper HD, but can't decide on 8 or 10x42

I'm not sure I need the range.....what are your thoughts

Thanks

I'm not on the island, but I would recommend 8x. With the 8 you have a bit more stability, if you need range a spotting scope will serve you better.

10 x 42 if your looking at any distance - prob be fine with 8 's if lots of bush and not too far viewing ! :) RJ

I tried both before I bought my Zeiss Victory TFL binoculars and for me because the glass is so crystal clear and sharp I could not hold the 10X steady enough. Same with the Swarovski's I tried.Because of that the advantage of the extra power was lost, so I bought 8X. They are fantastic glass and I don't regret choice of binocular or power.

I went to an 8 from a 10 last year and am glad I did, I agree 100% with the above posts. Realisticaly over here you will be spending most of your time cruising timber or slash edges or perhaps walking roads, don't need to see real long distances for that....most of the time. I found with the 8's I'm not messing with the focus knob as much when I'm peering into/thru a piece of timber, with the 10's everything was a little more intensified at closer distances so I was constantly focusing to accurately see objects that were not that far apart distance wise.

I went from 10 to 8 power this year. The thoughts were: broader field of view, less shaky, and better low light performance. Ding, ding, ding on all three points as well I find I fiddle with the focus less.

I have not found any difficulty having 2x less magnification as if I want greater detail I use my spotting scope.

There's 27 feet difference in your FOV at a 1000 yards between 8&10 power, I prefer 10x everytime as I enjoy the extra power,If you hunt alpine or ever plan on hunting sheep I would think about 10x, go to a store that has both powers in the model u want so u can compare both and see the difference for yourself.
Either way you will b very happy with your choice of binoculars.

Dropped down from 10 to 8 as well and to be honest, I don't think there's a big difference for me and the hunting I do. On the island, it's not like we have to count points, so the extra mag isn't really necessary.

8 all the way...my son has a pair of cheaper Leupolds (Acadia's) that are much clearer and brighter than my Leupold Katmai's which are 10 power and twice the cost of the Acadia's.
My next pair will probably be the new Zeiss 8x42 that Cabela's has out now for about $500

10x Razor HD has 15' wider FOV then 8x Viper HD

With the Swaro EL range the 8x42 has a 411' field of view vs the 10's 310'.
