Aluminum vs. steel, looking at an aluminum trailer with ramp and side walls, pricey but looks awfully convenient. Worth the money or just get a steel one and paint it every year? Live on the Island and things do rust, even when stored under roof. Looking at $7-800 difference. 1 quad to haul, long highway trips, hope to buy old snowmobile some day too. ( I would never haul both at same time)Trailers are 10 foot long. Thanks for experience/advice.

I was a welder by trade for 20+ years so I know a bit about metalurgy. I will tell you that salt eats aluminum faster than steel if constantly exposed to it. The only advantage aluminum has is strength per lb of material. That being said steel is still stronger when put to the test. A 1/8" aluminum plate may have a higher tensile rating than a 1/8" mild steel plate, but under strain the aluminum will tear apart first. I personally would save the cash and go steel. If your really concerned about corosion have it hot dip galvanized, or cadium plated. I am sure there are places in the LML that will do it for you. When I had my shop in Ontario, I would build trailers that were 30 feet in lenght and have them sent out to Toronto for a hot dip. Hope this helps

Last year l was at the same cross roads and went with steel. http://www.bccargotrailers.com/specials-details.php?trailer=47 ....been a good rig so far with no complaints. Make sure you size it to your needs and give thought to what you may want down the road.

I would go with steel, If you crack the frame on a trip you can get it repaired anywhere, you may have a tougher time with aluminum

honestly, can't stand having to haul my toys in a trailer. Trailer to haul gear on long trips with lots of gear, otherwise toy goes in back of truck since most trips are just day trips for a ride

I like this one more, can haul 2 quads but is much smaller and lighter, could also be easily pulled by your quad.

Dont forget with the price of scrap aluminum your trailer could be a major theft hazard especially if you ever leave it unattended in the bush or parking lots. Not so much with a steel one.

How long a trailer did you get? Every place a go says they have low stock, is this sales hype or does the supply go down this time of year.

They probably aren't ordering any more as trailers are more a summer thing and no one wants to get caught sitting on inventory all winter, so wouldn't be surprised if supply is down right now........flip side of that is if you do find one that fits your needs, you may be able to twist a good deal on it for the same reason that they don't want them over the winter.

Love my aluminum trailer.Had it for over 5 years now.Haul dirt, yard waste, lumber for my work and no problems with road salt or brine.Super light which I love when moving it around the yard.etc.

i agree.
i'm always surprised at seeling a fullsize truck pulling a quad on a trailer, yet his box is completely empty.
I guess some guys just don't like getting the quad out of the truck?? I don't know.

i'm rolling in a suv, so i'm using a trailer for that reason only.
my opinion to the Opie's question, i'd go with steel.
unless $$ is no concern at all.
those aluminum units they make are pretty sweet, but way, WAY over-priced.
i'd never pay what they're asking for those.
plus, with a steel trailer, it's easy enough to find a u-bilt or even build it yourself, like we did with mine.

If you plan on doing any mods to the trailer, I'd go steel as alum is damn expensive and not everyone can weld it well. If you're into doing the work yourself, you can build a pretty decent unit out of an old tent/travel trailer which can be found dirt cheap/free sometimes. Almost finished building one myself, might be into it for $400 (after recycling the alum and selling misc parts). Deck is approx 6'x8.5' with about 20" sides that will be boxed in with alum diamond plate. Will also have a rack for my 12' alum boat, lock box etc.

Id go with steel if i were you. Alot easier to find someone to weld on it if you want to do some customizing sometime down the road aluminum shops charge an arm and a leg for any little thing you want done. I scored an ex Jims mowing trailer with the large tool boxes across the front and a 4x4x6ish cargo area in the back for a flat of beer off my neighbour! Just needs a little sheet metal, a leaf over lift and some spare 33mts i got kicking around and it'll be ready for the bush.
