A raccoon attempted to beat the tar out of my dog last night at 3am - He wouldn't go away - he wanted the dog food - I got my bow out, and had a few clean shots from a few yards away, but passed as I wasn't sure of the legality. What's the word on this? Can this pest be shot? On my property? In the city? At night? Are there any restrictions for schedule b animals?

The only problem that you may have is a bylaw restricting the use of the bow or hunting within the city limits.

But other than that........Kill em. They do make nice warm hats for this time of the year.

Slippers to.

If I get a through and through, will he run far? Will he scream if I pin him to the ground? I'm just worried about him waking up the neighbors.

Trap the little bugger and lend him to a hound guy. Makes an exellent trainer.

I saw one speared with a fish knife tied to a long pole in a cherry tree one time.

In the morning he was dead in the neighbour's back yard.

I'd say he went about 6 yards.

They sold the house and moved away shortly after that.

Whatever you do, don't be transporting them alive, as a special permit is needed. If shooting your bow within your community is legal, then hammer him with it. If you decide to go the cage trap route, wire the lid open for a while until the coons get used to going in and out freely. They will often play with a trap the first couple times before going in and get educated by firing it from the outside and getting spooked.

I shot one at about 15 yards with 6 shot out of a bull pine, it landed on my rake, broke it, jumped up and bit my dog, I had to shoot it again, I have never seen a critter that tough, (goats maybe). I don't think you can shoot anything at night unless you have a torch and a card.

Word of warning when handling Raccoons. They carry a cyst (Raccoon Round worm) and there may be up to 15000 cysts in a single gram of scat. They ARE transfeable to humans and have cause 2 deaths in small children in recent years. They are not the cutsey little guys that some folks would like you to think. Go to any seach engine such as Google Advance Search and type in Raccoon Roundworm then disinfect your screen when you have finished watching. As A word of warning wear gloves when handling these guys and do not let your dogs ride in the same area in your truck where you have been transporting them. Put your dog in a dog box.

Track down the Firearms Act. There are laws against shooting within 100 m. of dwellings, neighbours etc.

A few years back the CDC (center for disease control) ask a few of us that were trapping Raccoons to submit the carcasses. they found that fully 70% were infected with Raccoon Roundworm. Now you can eat them if you want but they are not on my menu though I imagine if you really cook them good they might be OK.
