Saw two 5x5 bull elk in velvet this morning trying to cross the highway along Kanaka creek on my way thru maple ridge.I did a uturn with hopes of getting a couple pics but by the time I got turned around and went back I couldnt see then anymore. I hope these have a better fate than the last one that ventured thru here about 10 years ago and was hit on the highway between ridge and mission.
I am going to call the CO's this morning and let them know . I am not sure if they would make an effort to tranquilze them and bring them back to the upper pitt or not. I am sure this is where they came from.

I just got off the phone with the report wildlife guy and its not just today . They have been getting calls for the last 3-4 weeks on elk roaming around maple ridge. His words were "the biologist for the area is quite excited about it". I asked if there would be an effort made to bring them back to the upper pitt (assuming this is where they came from) but he couldnt answer that. He said he just passes the info along .

There is another thread with pictures and yes we've been watching them for a few weeks now,
got a few pictures a few nights ago but not the best quality
Either way nice to see them.
I think these ones worked there way down from the Stave lake side.

The wife and I watched them last night for about 45 minutes until dark. Sorry:confused:, the only way I can copy and paste is off of the FB photos she posted. I can't get them off of the card.

Will be interesting to see how LML society chooses to deal with safety, vehicle/wildlife collision and crop/yard depredation issues. I guess the cougars will follow.

Wolves are already here. And they are healthy looking. And them and the cats have been here for a long time. My father hunted up Hemlock valley before it was a ski resort and seen lots of wolves. There were two shot in the lower fraser valley in the early nineties. Heck there are grizzly bears at the north end of Harrison lake. Which isnt to far away.

Hopefully we will have a problem, like Millerville, just outside of Calgary..

Having the C.O's, scream at you to "put your EFFING barrels over the fence and shoot these elk." :-) True story

It has been a good three weeks, maybe even closer to a month since they were last spotted by anyone I know or myself. They were last seen over on Thorn Hill.

They're definitely from upper Pitt. Quite a trek for them to make though! Pretty exciting for the next few seasons because people are going to be vying for those elks with LEH.

e: You will need a boat just to get access, I believe.

They should look at redefining the leh map for the harvest area by adding: "...or on private land in Maple Ridge":-D.

Well, haven't seen any reports about the Kanaka Creek elk for quite some time....
anyone either seen them in Maple Ridge, or know what happened to them?
Poachers, cougars,...?

I saw a video of a bull elk, by some chicken barns, on the south side of the hwy1.
Tolmie & No3 Rd.
He was headed for the border, up over Vedder mtn.
If it was the one in the Abbotsford newspaper, at least he made it across the freeway.
I doubt they hang around the Fraser valley, the Hwy, and the river, giving them barriers
IMO, if they swim the Fraser going south, make it across the Hwy, they keep going south.
(I'd think)

For sure the wolves have been following them down along the drainages into the fraservalley ,I shot a 150 lb'er half way up deroche mnt 4 yrs ago when all the elk siteings were takeing place.
